I see what the problem was!

Miku was a Gyaru type that only knew Student type and Gyaru type moves while Yabe is a Teacher type.
Teacher types are immune to Student types moves and resistant to Gyaru types moves so only take 0.5x damage so even with a Same Type Attack Bonus Miku wasn't doing much damage.

Now that Miku has evolved (graduated) she has gained a Wife typing and a few Wife moves. Wife type moves aren't resisted by Teacher types so she is now able to land full damage STABs on Yabe.

We'll have to wait and see if she'll learn a Super Effective move down the line and land that 2.0x damage critical.
