This is one of the most cliched mangas to ever cliche its way into my reading list. I'll still read it, but it's the standard "butler gets fired for 'incompetence' but turns out to be super strong and was actually single-handedly carrying the whole territory" mixed with a smidge of "sage decided to reincarnate into the future due to troubles in their time", which should be a fine combo, but it somehow feels even more braindead than usual if you think about it (if you're going to read this series, don't think about it).

Why he chose to live as a butler for so long in an abusive household when he had the sensibilities and moral understanding of an adult is beyond me, especially since he reincarnated himself specifically because he had none of the freedom he wanted, but it's not nearly as bad as the FL appearing in the standard alleyway-attempted-rape that these series love to throw into the mix to make our smurf protagonist stand out even more. The logic there was about as forced as what comically standard goon A attempted to do to our poor heroine, where she was supposedly not allowed to fight back against an attempted rape because... she's nobility? And (maybe because it would've taken away the ability for him to show off his crazy 'strongest sage' powers, but) the protagonist didn't deny it so apparently the nobility are fair game for the citizens in the world to commit crimes against??? Doesn't that also make the uber-powerful protagonist's complete and utter subservience even more questionable? Like, that's the kind of world-building you throw in if you want to make a true smurf that just brute-forces everything, but for some reason it's in the standard "servant oppressed by nobility" world? Like how the heck are the nobles going to enforce jack if any random shmuck can drag them into an alley and beat the daylights out of them?

Now that I've got my (unnecessary) thinking out of the way, I may as well give this a quick rating.
To pass the time: 6/10.
To use your brain: 2/10.
I don't quite understand how this is award winning unless they won gold at the "how many cliches can you stuff into one chapter" competition, but considering every book is a New York Times Best Seller, I'll just ignore that like the weird shenanigans going on in the worldbuilding.
such a well written review, really appreciate it

I don't think I've ever truly understood what it meant for something to be aggressively mediocre until now. The art style is nice enough, but I'm not convinced that the story isn't literally the chatGPT response to 'write a fantasy manga with the greatest percentage of trope by page length'. What makes it even worse/more entertaining is that whoever is responsible for this doesn't really seem to understand the pacing or point of any of the tropes they're imitating, which only adds to the sheer confusion and hilarious mid-ness of it all. The most 5/10 manga of all time.
i wrote that prompt on the app just for funsies and it gave out a better story than this trash.
This kind of middle-of-the-pack quality is too mediocre to be made by a machine.

which is kind of impressive in its own way ngl

the "Popular New Titles" thing on the front page really should take ratings into account, feels weird that isekai slop with a 6.2 star rating is the number 1 most popular new title currently

So I like it. Not my favorite. Not even close. But I like it.
Some problems I see with this is that its a bit fast paced. It also seems like the mc MIGHT (It MIGHT NOT happen) get a harem but I have hopes for this.
I give a 7/10

Should've expected it when i see the 6+ rating. Way too many cliche. Guess my mind snapped when theres that 'commoner cant be rank 1' from headmaster cliche and decided to drop this. Thanks for translating this tho

The novel this was based off won an award for its originality.
Let that sink in.
Another fun fact about the novel:

It lasted less than a year before the author ended it (apprently at the end of some tournament arc because what fantasy school manga doesn't have one)

It has 46 chapters. The manga chapters seem to be close to the WN chapter positions (maybe a bit faster, so if the whole story is adapted, probably less than 46 chapters)

It doesn't tell but, when the page about the "monsters attacking" was shown, people (villagers? serfs?) were being killed left and right. Right?

Then, we just straight into a highschooler's fantasy school life... Isn't that odd ?

This main character is pretty garbage unfortunately, infinitely powerful but acts like a complete pushover most of the time for pointless reasons. He's got a compulsion for fitting in and not breaking the status quo, but he is also kind of socially stupid, so he does it accidentally often enough that it makes his compulsion seem stupid.

Oh my fucking god i go and read last 2 chapter of WN and this shit is fucking suck.
unless it elementary school competition i can't see how this shit won anything.

asshole kid tuant in tournament > lose >priciple got bit scare> bad guy suddenlly appear> reveal to be big bad > friendship power> defeat in like 2 fucking sentence(i skip cause it boring)> priciple come out to say sorry that he think commoner is a meat sack worthless piece of freak> end. All of this in ONE fucking CHAPTER
and epilouge is like 3 fucking sentence of wooo we win, it so fucking short i can post it here

"Cheers!"
There was a ton of food lined up in the first year classroom.
It's the victory ceremony for the fighting tournament.
All the classmates looked like they were having fun, talking and devouring the food.
"Are you happy with that? Keep the title of lowest student."
Professor Elea poked me in the shoulder.
"Yes. Well, you see. Surprisingly, I actually like the title of Lowest Student."
It was because I was a low-ranking student that I was able to become close with Yuri, Sasha, and Elea-sensei. If I had entered as a normal student, things might have been different.
"Maybe you're a masochist?"
"Yay! Super masochist!"
"Maybe you're a masochist?"
Yuri and Sasha come in and cheer them on.
"Hey, hey. I'm definitely not a masochist."
When they said that, they smiled happily.
By the way, Lot returned to Count Trey.
He was now quietly helping his father with his work. The brainwashing of the third-year students had been successfully undone.
Yes, it's over now.
The battle with the Witch of Dark Clouds is now complete.
"...I look forward to working with you in the future."
"What's the matter?"
"Hey, your face is red."
"Maybe he's embarrassed?"
Really, they're the same as always.
"...I look forward to working with you in the future."
"Yes! Please continue to support us!"
"I'll do my best as a teacher."
But, somehow.
I got the best friends I could ever have in my previous life.
I am extremely happy right now.

Who in their right mind would rate this joke above 1/10 ???
It's clinché on top cliché to the point it's funny, but it's so boring that's it's just awfull. It's not even a parody. The only cliché that we don't have yet is "useless guy get isekai", it's like 6 chapters. You could create the rest of the manga just by thinking of overused trope.

Like... My character would on 100% say to himself: "Yeah, fuck that guy." and would go to win the scholarship anyway. Like really, that's pathetic. Or another one would not step down on being lowest ranked until this bullshitter would give him a cool reason like: "You will change the appearance of lowest ranked students", or "I need someone to help the lowest guys study, cuz ya know... Can't do that officially cuz of racism...".

I really hate this character trope in manga. And the worst thing is... All the characters are the fucking same.... Like goddammit!

Three things to say about this
1: it’s trash if you like it you have no taste ( and I mean that by if you say “ oh my god! This was amazing!” And you mean it)
2: The butler is a jackass ( no he is not a badass not is he super cool or interesting, the author just mad him say “oh mid-tier magic ain’t that good, it’s pretty common” to a noble, then teleports away and says “these commoners have probably never seen magic before in their lives.” This means he just said to someone who was like “look at this awesome thing!” And he basically said “Pathetic” so he warranted being hated by the noble kid.)

3:the writings shit like who decided that your world would have an OP butler being oppressed (cool trope I guess) and then in the EXACT SAME CHAPTER have someone say “Oh yeah, nobles can’t hurt commoners.”

4: (I don’t care I’m not changing the number of items in my list to 4) how the fuck is this garbage award winning? No seriously like what shit were they up against to win.

edit note: I just realized what this is! You know whenever you have thoughts like “oh it would be cool if a character did this!” Or you just made up a miniature story in your head about a character. That’s what this is! However, unlike normal people who just have these thoughts and then later forget them, this idiot of an author decided to actually spend their time (5 minutes) to create a manga!

One of the girls' name is Yuri. That should be a big hint. :D

I'm not so optimistic. The only sliver of non-mediocrity I saw in this was that it only took the Lord who banished MC 4 chapters to figure out he'd made a mistake. That's incredibly quick by manga standards. Everything else was meh. I have several 6+ and even some 5+ rated series in my bookmarks. But this one isn't gonna make the cut.

And the reason I came to the comments section: If you ever need to find the "best" people in a group, please, please, please do not do a single elimination tournament like this story does. In random single elimination, the #2 person might face the #1 person in the first round, and get eliminated immediately. And the people who survive to the end of your tournament are a combination of the strongest and people who got lucky and drew weak opponents.

That's why all the sports which have single elimination playoffs, first do a long season where each team plays every other team multiple times. Their win/loss record is then used to seed the single elimination tournament, so the #1 and #2 seeds can only meet in the finals. The #2 and #3 seeds, and #1 and #4 seeds can only meet in the semi-finals. etc.

Hmm. A lot to cover but I can do it. Alright lets start with

So I believe you are right because the harem tag was added recently. I originally hoped it wouldn't be so but it would appear you are correct. Which is disappointing:meguuusad:

Now for this
The only sliver of non-mediocrity I saw in this was that it only took the Lord who banished MC 4 chapters to figure out he'd made a mistake. That's incredibly quick by manga standards
Yeah. I'll give you that. This probably was the fastest where the king or noble has regretted kicking MC out. I don't see any reason too disagree.

Everything else was meh
I kinda disagree. It provided some entertainment to ME but Im not here to call your tastes trash. I just... read everything... moving on

do not do a single elimination tournament like this story does
I agree so hard with this. I believe you should never do this type of match UNLESS it's a tournament.

Hmm that's a cool fact. Thanks for teaching me.

That's probably it. welp see you

Oh my I'm all for cliche slop but my one line in the sand is to not have the villains be absolutely pants on head retarded. Like even the headmaster isn't like "well rules are rules, sorry" it's more "do as I say number one ranking commoner scum that could probably wipe the entire capital off the map" and he even tries to straight up maim or kill him. Oof

This artist deserves a better story.
I mean, my favourite parts are when the mc no-sells an attack or insult and that's pretty much all thanks to the artist making it look good.
I like the fuzzy wrinkles and hairy fireballs. The genki girl looks plush. The monsters are a bit basic, but they're serviceable.
The art is carrying these tropes on its back. Other than the Lord getting wise real fast, that's good on its own. Too bad he's had days to beg for knights or hire mercenaries and really, his whole town should have been wiped out at the rate those monsters were pillaging. I'm definitely not reading the novel for this one.
