This made me tear up a lot because I could relate to being the only dark skinned person in a class full of white people. They would assume I was a lot of different races because of my skin and told me they only knew English..... Very relatable....

It gets tiring after a while. Imagine your whole life being asked about your nationality your whole life. Each time someone asks is like someone pulling a strand of hair. It's only one person, one piece of hair but it will hurt in some time. The protag is having to explain she is born and raised as any other Japanese person. She just happens to have a half black french father.

I'm not saying you are wrong fully. I do have to remind myself with the elderly that they don't know better. That their questions are more from a place of not harmful ignorance. They weren't taught to not ask those questions.

This is such a genuine story that talks about a lot of struggles that so many people have to go though. I appreciate that the author didn't shy away from how painful it can be. The part where the MC talks about being "chipped away" by comments that are too small to reasonably speak out against is something I especially relate to.

Now that I can actually read the chapter, the racist treatment this manga got feels even worse. The fact that the TL put in significant effort to scanlate this just to callously mock the author's work and black people in general...it honestly just makes me depressed.

Being perfectly honest, I've got some rage still left over from Gamergate and more recently, (((western credit card companies))) trying to mess with the Japanese entertainment industry from both the mainstream and doujin realms and even I think this is a complete nothingburger. If I wasn't such a big fan of Aja Kong, who's a fairly well known example of a half Japanese half black person who had it fairly rough growing up, I would have been ragebaited like a true mark. This is just w/e. This is just someone's autobiographical account of their experience as far as I can tell, and its fairly obvious this wasn't written to do the numbers or else the female lead would have been designed to look a lot cuter.

I like stories that show how different people live. Learning about the Ainu in Golden Kamuy was one of the best parts. And now we get to learn about mixed race people in Japan thanks to this one.

The lead singer of Queen Bee (they do a lot of anime themes: Undead Unluck, Tokyo Ghoul, VA in Inu-Ou, etc) is also mixed black + Japanese. Based off the biography I read for them, they are going through a lot of the same things as the main character of this series. Their song called Half (one of the EDs for Tokyo Ghould) is about the topic.

Some people are naturally dumb like that. But, because of the way monetizition works on twitter, facebook, etc, there are subsets of people making sizeable middle class earnings by farming toxic engagement.

Agreed. As a global audience member, this translation is too literal and foreign. The original was better, but they should've added more culture war politics and antifascist messaging. Then it would be as good as official localizations.
