It's a really lousy set up, killing a bandit who probably at least made other people suffer through stealing might be too far, but if they did kill others or worse like rape, then it's really nothing to be troubled. It's justified, it's their choice.
On the other hand if they sent mc to a battlefield, where soldiers weren't already combat ready, without own hands stained with blood then maybe, but it's still war.
