Mapping essentially means he has good spatial awareness and given the composition of that team he will most likely become a thief/scout using his ability to avoid traps etc.
@Tearsax think about it in this world there are 10 dungeons created by god and there should be more than 4 people in this world that want to conquer them and they would probly kill for a map of these places , but why did only this grupe of 4 think about the skill of our MC to get one?
@0neDragon They only decided to pick up our MC because they found a map in a dungeon that could have only been made by someone that had the Mapping Skill. Either the manga is skipping some things or the translation is wrong, but the Mapping Skill isn't unique to the MC. It's just stupidly rare, has commonly been known to be useless with historical context, and is completely outclassed by 2 other skills that do the same thing better or in a more cost effective way. The only thing unique about the skill is that it works in dungeons, but no user of the Mapping Skill is actually strong enough to survive there/actually became an adventurer since the skill takes up slots for better skills.
the MC isn't OP at all, but is a complete autist and trains support skills for hours on end to get them up to insane levels. His mapping skill is just as useless as he thinks it is until they get it to the later levels of dungeons, but even then it just does its job with no hidden OP effects.
@bcthecontact
Well, the novel is basically shown on MC's PoV, while in graphic media like manga and anime, you can show the emotion on other character despite you view it in MC's PoV. So this manga definitely shows that there should be more reasons why they decided to split up.
It could be that his inferior complex already develops when they were 15 after showed the skills they had, but became much stronger after they separated so idk.
No, it's not betrayal. He realised that he was piece of shit that leeched her off to the death. IIRC he was useless as fuck since the one who cooked was the childhood friend, the one who found foods was her, the one who found place to stay was her, the one who fought the monsters was her, etc. He was just there because she allowed him.
He being OP was later be introduced in this arc. Basically he got to learn some learn-able support skills since his role was becoming thief, enemy search, trap dismantle and trap detection. His mapping skill will help this learn-able support skills. The mapping skill is basically made him know the area around him with the radius about 1 km (or more? I forgot). With support skills that have been enhanced by this, he can detect traps, detect enemies and measure everyone's strength around that radius, and he does that simultaneously. He also can dismantle high-level magic-seal traps fast compared to average adventure. Well he is still weak af physically, so from the latest translation chapter, he is learning how to evade and attack, etc.
Despite this, he still feels like he's only helping little, well all the party members there are OP too though.
@dokidoki @heroeric already said that. Well tbf I don't lurk there so I don't know.
The time gap is around 6 months IIRC.
@Infiking
He's OP in my book. From chp 17 where he tried to run away from the building with the best girl
“I checked with ‘Enemy Search’, so there’s no need to worry. Because I’ve been concentrating on my ‘Enemy Search’ for a while now, I can figure out the state of most of the people in this building from the strength of their presences. Of course, this technique takes quite a lot of concentration to do, so I was pretending to be passed out until just then…”
To be honest, I had no idea what he was saying. I didn’t believe someone able to determine whether a person was sleeping or not using ‘Enemy Search’ would be sane.
Since ‘Enemy Search’ was an arts that detected the presence of monsters, and even high class users could only barely manage to detect humans. There was no doubt to this, since I heard more than I ever wanted to about thief skills when I was being waited upon by the men from the group of thieves.
Ignoring my surprise, Note continued forward.
In order to avoid detection from the thieves, Note was expanding his ‘Enemy Search’ range while proceeding down a route plotted out by his ‘Mapping’ skill.
Beside mapping skill can be used everywhere. The difference between mapping skill with other similar skills is mapping skill can be used in dungeon while other similar skills can't. But mapping skill is inferior since it can only map the area on smaller radius compared to similar skills, but it's also more superior since it can picture the area more detail. He takes advantages of it on different level
for enhancing his learn-able skills
. He thought that everyone (with mapping skill) does it though.
@macarroiz it's pretty a injustified critism, if they do a badass mc you can say,
Hey see the badass mc #51612
If you do a naive mc you can do the same,
pretty every arch type of mc is already overuse
And that not what matter, what make a story good for the characters part is how the develop the characters, not if they are original in their archtype.
I feel like maybe they should have explained what his skill does a little better, because at this point he really does seem useless. Just have someone else carry some paper and a pencil and mark down where you have been. Boom, the MC is superfluous. Unless this is a world where you need a skill in order to do literally anything, like the "read" skill or the "math" skill.
@daxrocket: We know there are other map related skills and maybe those skills are considered of the lowest tier in their world. Also when he says he got the weakest i think he is referring to "the lowest grade" of skill. You know, like in games were there is legendary, epic, unique, rare and normal grade weapons? Maybe the skill he got is the lowest grade and thats why he said that.
@0neDragon: First of all, maybe they are the only group trying to conquer dungeons that know about the skill the MC has. Its not like he went around saying he has a "useless" skill to everyone. Then we also know that mapping skills arent useful in dungeons and not even this group knows for sure if his skill will work there, so maybe if other people heard he got "some mapping skill" they just thought its one of the other useless known mapping skills or even if its new that it will be as useless as the others.
After all this group is gambling with a nobody, you cant expect everyone to do the same or even to know he exists.
@siscon Yeah, I don't consider that OP. Sure he gets useful abilities, but they don't make him any stronger than anyone else and other people in his group can use the same skills as well, almost to the same degree, since he picked up those abilities from them in the first place.
huh? If he's the only one in the world with this skill, then how do people know about the skill?
And the name "Arrivers" sounds horrible. I've never actually heard anyone use that word. I even thought it wasn't proper English, but supposedly Wiktionary says it is, although Chrome spellcheck marks it as an error.
From what @siscon stated about the MC and childhood friend, why in the hell would the author change that in the manga? It's subtle but important.
This MC was mopey from the get-go. Was he like that in the novel as well?
Also why not just show us all of that in the first chapter? It would have been interesting showing his realisation that maybe his leeching behaviour was what shattered the friendship bond in childhood friends mind.
for a manga about an MC that has to out-smart the dungeons with his "waaah useless skill but its actually unique waaa" to not think about simple shit like mapping newly discovered dungeons is pretty worrying.
@Eureur and others: When he was with Miya, he was too blinded by his inferiority to his childhood friend to consider this. In the newer adventure parties: They simply dont have enough power for it to matter. The Arrivers are all incredibly powerful, so they can carry a useless fighter with them for a single benefit, but those other parties are too weak to be able to carry a useless fighter while also fighting the powerful deep level monsters, so they wouldnt care to take him into a dungeon.
So what bothers me is MC was quick to decide that an apparently rare skill is useless. But at the same time it is slightly justified by the fact that it is a very niche skill that will only be useful in specific areas and the fact that the majority of the world deems it a dead and useless skill. Furthermore, wasn't his wish that his skill would be something that would allow him to be a great adventurer? If this skill is as useful as it seems for the dungeons of God, then MC would be the first to not only make maps for these dungeons thus gaining immense fame but also being part of the party that would conquer those dungeons. It's a weirdly well thought out scenario that fully takes advantage of the concept of 'God' and their ability to know all this.
So...it's a one and done kind of thing? He may be the only user with Mapping right now, but it sounds like other people have heard about Mapping specifically, the one that takes three skill slots. That means that once he's done, all other people who may come around with Mapping are just as useless as he already feels. So this is the story of the first and last great Mapping user.
To be an adventurer his skill is trash without a doubt, being a adventurer entails having the skills to be able to survive by yourself in certain situations as well, he is a great cartographer/radar and not a great adventurer. After they are done mapping all the important dungeons or just the dungeons they want to map, they could just discard him like the useless fighter he is. The author might have thought that it was a clever idea to say mapping is actually a skill that will really make him a "great adventurer" but it won't.
They could have give him some support skills instead of only giving maping and saying it takes all 3 slots, like UR and SR skills only takes 1 slot each this is unbalanced as hell. This bothers me a little cause it just shows how much the author want us to make the mc weak but without having the trouble to actually making a balanced system for it to work.
