It's not about being retarded (though if you look at it, the behaviour is stupid), they're very often addicts. The addiction works for them as both a coping mechanism and form of entertainment, most often the person in question is not aware of that (specially in Japan, where the mental health discussion is behind times) and the industries that prey on them completely outgun them.

I also think that almost hitting below rock bottom will be a catalyst for her future character development.

The author of Gal Cleaning broke because of the editor. I think author really has an in-depth knowledge of AV industry and attends comikets like a fanatic. In other words, a TRUE OTAKU is making this manga.

The supply of ideas is still not running out. Probably Mr. editor is actually ASSISTING Mr. author (otaku) this time.
