I wanna see her haul off and slap him like in that manga Suzuka while yelling "Notice me goddamn it!" Guys in shounen rom-com manga are so dumb, he's got this hot childhood friend bending her ass backwards all over trying to catch his affection. She also knows all his ups and downs since she has been around him so long. But he's got his attention set on this girl known for being hard to get along with that thinks he's disgusting just because she has a nice ass. What does he like about her besides her looks? She just seems like a bitch to me. I'm not complaining since that's how the manga is supposed to be with this gimmick, but still

@CSmith327 You nailed it. I get this feeling, being fairly new to manga, that these artists sit with cookie cutter ideas and try to punch a hole in dough that hasn't been quite "done before", usually making something that has been overly "done before."

I suppose that's why, of all manga available, my top choice has become Kaguya-sama wants to be confessed to / Love Is War. The characters, though flawed, feel the most genuine of all these classroom stories. After 201 chapters, I dread seeing it end.

Last line in this chapter: “I’ll never understand.” Too true, brotha, too true.

I'm really liking this kinda meta dynamic,
A POV of the girl who is watching the growth of the "main character" and her "rival"
and her trying to find a way to fit into the relationship, but using manga logic against the guy who uses normal logic

@Fujiwara_no_Sai My favorite male character from a harem manga that doesn't have the qualities of all these other retards is Aoshima from My Wife is Wagatsuma-san. He has a dream one night that's a time jump with him being married to the most popular pretty girl in his school Ai Wagatsuma, and he tries his damnest to get it to come true. He meets some other girls and ends up triggering romance flags on them and then he dreams of a different girl being his wife, but he doesn't want that so he keeps trying to get it back to being Ai. All the characters were well developed, lovable, and realistic. I actually teared up a little when he confessed to her cuz I was so proud of his growth. Ai's character design is super adorable too. It doesn't have an anime adaptation but it's probably one of my favorite shounen romance manga. The only place you can read all 13 volumes without downloading or buying it is here https://mangapark.net/manga/wagatsuma-san-wa-ore-no-yome
It was on mangarock before it was shutdown but this site has an archive of all mangarock stuff. Read from the version rock one if you're interested. If Aoshima was an actual person I'd love to be his friend, you can't really say that for a lot of other characters that are dense or hateable.

I'm definitely a hopeless romantic. I've had manga & anime bring me to tears.

The latest releases of Re:Zero -- when Subaru Natsuki is with Rem and he asks Emilia if she would be kind enough to turn away because he was going to cry just slayed me.

I've got many favorites. Sadly, some of them I've found in the Ecchi basket with some unnecessary Fan Service >cough< that really brings nothing to the party. One that has risen to the top (story is a joy) is: Yankee JK Kuzuhana-chan. I wait for each chapter, and they come out fairly frequently. If the "fan service" (irritating) is not an issue, it makes for an interesting read. If that's over the top, I'll post some "cleaner" titles that are generally speaking: well written and somewhat addictive.

P.S., thanks for the reference, and I'm heading off there immediately.

@Fujiwara_no_Sai I have that one bookmarked in my manga app, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Tbh the boy in a girl's school trope scares me off cuz it kinda feels like forced romance, but the comments on it were good and people said it was better than their expectations. I like gyaru characters too. I'll probably read it soon. I'll read harem stuff but I prefer established couple stuff or shoujo. I like it when it's already set out who the mc is going to be with or there's only one or two rivals instead of a group of girls lusting over him. It's also great when the characters start dating or are already dating from the first chapter or vol. The male leads in harem manga tend to be either dense not noticing any of the girl's feelings, not really caring for a relationship or only seeking main girl, or is a harem seeking pervert that's usually also dense. Yonakano Reiji ni Harem Wo is really good but the main character doesn't really want to be in a relationship. That Anjou gyaru manga is good too, it's slow burn but it looks like they're getting closer to confessing (maybe?) either way the mcs already act like a couple in it.

@Fujiwara_no_Sai Two manga you really need to check out are definitely Henjo and Attack on Eroko-san. Eroko is a spin-off of Henjo and for the best experience you should read up to the latest of Henjo then read Eroko since it takes place after vol 14 of Henjo. If you aren't turned off by dirty jokes Henjo is a really good age gap rom-com with cohabitation/co-worker elements. It's a slow build up but the characters get together by the 13th vol. Eroko is a super fast romance and also age gap, they even sleep together by the 20 ch. They're both super hilarious

@CSmith327 Noted! I'll look them up, book mark them and get to them as soon as time permits!

lol, our MC in wagatsuma-san-wa-ore-no-yome is SUCH an idiot in the starting chapters. Good GRIEF! I was tempted to count 1. how often his face appears where his mouth can be seen, and 2. compare the number to how often his jaw is unhinged and almost colliding with his navel. Gave up on the idea, trying hard to keep in mind this is Japanese humor... which, admittedly, I tend to confuse with "outright cringe" in most cases. A short list of some of my faves, in alphabetical order:
[ul][li]5Toubun no Hanayome Quintessential Quintuplets
[li]A Bouquet for an Ugly Girl
[li]A Story About Treating a Female Knight, Who Has Never Been Treated as a Woman, as a Woman -- Very popular but it sags in the middle. Eventually the author decides it's time to go hog wild and add something writers call: "a plot." Weird, huh.
[li]Akagami no Shirayukihime -- a.k.a., Snow White with the Red Hair. Anime exists.
[li]Hanazono Twins -- One's an idol, so she cannot date; the second twin's a Gyaru. "Comedy ensues."
[li]Hikaru no Go -- My second manga after Ranma 1/2.
[li]Hitomi-chan Is Shy With Strangers -- this one's just stupidly cute. I admit it.
[li]Kawaii Hito -- Ugly guy, cute girl
[li]Pseudo Harem -- No real harem; very popular.
[li]Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie -- top of my chart; really enjoy couples who fall in love.
[li]Shiotaiou no Sato-san ga Ore ni dake Amai -- this one's new, only 5 chapters, but it's got me hooked.
[li]Yamaguchi-kun wa warukunai -- tough looking kid, plain gal.
[li]Yankee-kun to Hakujou Gaaru -- Blind gal, seeing boy; irritating side: gal drawn like she's 9 years old, but she's 17.[/ul]

@Fujiwara_no_Sai If you plan to keep reading Wagatuma I'll warn you the references to japanese pop culture is very prominent. Lots of jokes about japanese sports stars and actors and wrestlers. They don't really distract from the story and the english version's translation notes explain them well. I guess you kinda learn from them but it's useless to know about japanese actors and stuff imo. Some other good fantasy romance manga with red haired female leads are Yona of the Dawn (ongoing) and Dawn of Arcana (finished). Yona has an anime but arcana doesn't. There's also a sequel to arcana being translated on dex right now, it's in the same world but on a different continent with different characters (I think? I haven't read it yet) If shoujo art doesn't bother you there's an interesting 90s proto-isekai manga called Kanata Kara (From Far Away) where the female lead gets blown up in a terrorist bombing and transported to another world where she has to learn their language (unlike most isekai) the romance in it is pretty good and it's a yin-yang good vs evil type ordeal. You can find the official english for it on mangasee, there's a page for it on here but no chapters.
