Err... I think you're getting the order of events mixed up.

Order:
1. Myne goes to church to get baptism.
2. Encounters books.
3. Wants to become priestess (or whatever it was called) cause books.
4. Goes back home, and tells parents that she wants to join the church. Insert family disapproval.
5. Goes to church for round 2, and discovers that church has magic tools which will extend her lifespan.
6. Rest of chapter. Benno explains all.

Until steps 5 & 6, no one made the connection that the church has the resources to save her (and would be willing to "help" her).
It simply wasn't a thought!

The family disapproval was purely them not wanting Myne to leave the family for books only.

For everyone saying Myne is not an idiot please explain how she did not know the consuming had to do with magical energy when it was told to her directly that it was caused by the acumulation of mana in the body.

This story had so great potential and then the author made everyone in the world stupid and I really hate stories that depend on the characters being stupid to work.

Wait, those "books" are already made of "paper" to smell of paper?

@mahtan Characters being stupid is the foundation of manga/ln/wn/etc. You're on the wrong media if you want a more thorough writing.

I agree with that but one thing is the characters being stupid and another is the plot depending on the stupidity of the characters to work.

@Nicromatic If the church doesn't have it, who does? I just assumed the church would take care of their own, like it turns out, surprise surprise, that they will. In real history organised religion was huge, and is still today in many parts of the world. None from a beggar to an emperor could ignore it. They had a library's worth of books as well, that is, a fortune in books alone protected by magic, to speak of their wealth and power. We already knew consuming was related to mana, and it makes sense the church would use magic. In a world with real magic, religion would obviously use it, unless it was a bogus religion.

The original text approximately says "kami no nioi", kami doesn't just refer to "paper", but to the generic of page in a book, and that's a characteristic smell of old books, including those made with animal skin, papirus, etc. It also includes scrolls with sutras and the like. English doesn't have a proper word for that.

They're so cute and I'm on the bus and I'm also trying not to cry for how cute they are.

She’s turns spectacularly stupid and single-minded when it comes to books. Also poor Lutz

@Kaarme , ahh yes, it's perfectly fine that you as an "educated" reader connected the dots.

But you must think of the characters themselves.
The smartest man of bunch would either be Benno or the Merchant Guild Leader. Both of whom, did not advise the church as an option for Myne.
This is likely not due to malice, but due to either ignorance (not connecting the dots that the church would be willing) or did not think it was possible.
After all, under normal circumstances, they only let nobles use the magic tools!

Now we bring it back to her family. If the smartest guys around didn't entertain the possibility, would the poor peasants with even less knowledge consider it?
Probably not!

About the church helping out one of their own.... Well, discrimnation is very real.
It's very likely only due to the present situation (post-war, lack of magic supplying nobles) that they'd consider a commoner to supply magic.

okayyyy so I read all the spoilers in the comment section

So @Nep and @ApolloX1209
I read the uh discussion forum (?) and they say her finance is not the chief priest. She is adopted by a feudal lord and her finance is the feudal lord's son. They also say chief priest is also longing for "family" and that's what Maine gave him.
Also, Maine becomes the feudal lord apparently.

Her first engagement gets broken later on in the story and as of the last chapter she is engaged to Ferdinand (blue haired priest). As you seem to not care about being spoiled you can confirm this yourself by reading the Google translaation of the final WN chapter: https://ncode.syosetu.com/n4830bu/677
It actually even says so on the very page you linked! "The fiance is feudal lord's son, she engaged with him so that she would not be taken by other territory, because she attracted many attention in noble school. Her engegement with chief priest only happen in the last arc, nearly the end of the novel."

alright, so after reading the spoilers that were available i can safely say i'll probably drop this. Literally this girl is just dumb through and through about books but in a very "WTF are you doing Myne" way so i'd rather not have frustration ahead. Thanks to everyone that added the tags hope the rest of you like the series but i for one can't deal with it at this point.

Damn, shouldn't have read the spoilers, but even before reading it I had a feeling it would go there so I clicked. Oh well, I'll give it some time and see if it affects my enjoyment.

To everyone reacting badly to the spoilers. Yes things that you dont like happened, but its still a good story albeit main’s shenanigans. Which is tbh a fun part of it.

Also to people saying about how she didnt notice about magic. When did you guys even know about anything that happens in your body without any information given by someone else? Did you really think that when you have a cold that cannot explained, even on a magical setting, that its not an actual disease? And yeah everyone else has no clue other than benno, which is already doing his absolute best to even get info he shouldn’t have access to (remember he is still a rising mid merchant).

Also for people worried about benno and lutz not appearing much anymore. They still do and are still a huge part of the story up to the very end

I was kind of wavering on dropping this or not, but now I'm convinced and it's a drop.

why are they acting like it's already decided that she's becoming a church slave? can't she either refuse or at least sign a contract that states she only needs to come in once a week to fill up the grail or something?
this seems incredibly contrived, like the characters have read ahead in the script
