@analias I know, right? Some of the cooking inaccuracies make me want to flip a table, but another part is happy there is cooking in this manga at all.

The way they describe how soup is made typically is that they boil the vegetables to both clean and soften them rather then for taste. Look at many old recipes and they just boiled the shot out of stuff to keep the water from killing people. Old soup recipes still includes this step of purging the cooking water before adding fresh water and meat back in. Salt soups were pretty common for a long time.

Remember for the bread that they have no concept of microbes and it is likely they do not harvest brewers yeast for bread baking. This level of civilization may carry yeast from batch to batch from the tools and surfaces making for inconsistent and intuition based means of fermentation. Myne’s sourdough starter is a product of a controlled environment. Based on descriptions in the novels it seems like normal bread is more like quick breads leavened through steam and holding its shape based on dense ingredients and shaping. Dense, low hydration doughs cut with lots of other grains like rye or barley make for heavy and dry loaves that barely contain yeast activity. Mix an understanding of gluten formation, the means to procure pure finely milled wheat flour, and a consistent source of yeast and you can make proper leavened bread. The introduction of refined sugar only makes sense in this world because it is imported.

Even the pizza they are making would be more like pita bread then pizza dough, combined with a Tomato sauce and melted cheese, everything would be new to everyone. Considering pancakes was surprising, the excitement is understandable. Heck steaming potatoes was seen as novel.

Ok so I wasn't paying much attention to the restaurant thing, but did Myne just straight up tell Benno "hey take these recipes they're a cuisine called Italian, ask no questions"?

@Fuyuqi Benno is already suspicious of Myne since the Shampoo production, and already told her that he would rather not ask anything and continue getting new products rather than pestering her and making her cutting him off forever. So I think he is just resigned to everything Myne 'produces' as long as they sell.

@mojo it's believed in that world that water from cooking vegetables is bad for your health. The reason will be explained later

Really, honzuki is very well crafted. So many things connect to each other.

Thank you for the translation 🙏 , the novel is good but because im still novice in english its kinda hard to describe the story in my head , and anime always have to skip and have different interpretation, so manga is the best for me :)

I'm thankful this focuses and expands on parts that the anime just skipped or glanced over. Makes continuing to read it worthwhile.

@Med1um

"anime skip over many things. Well, it's obvious, since they could even fill entire book of 50+ chapters in 14 episodes...

But anime not only "discard something unimportant", but sometimes entirely reverse the meaning behind the scenes.
For example, when Maine and Benno were giving money to head priest... When Maine fell and couldn't move her body, Benno was panicking like crazy, it also was bad reminder of the death of his lover. In anime they just deleted such an awesome scene, and Benno just shrugged it like "it's a normal thing, she always fall sick anyway"

Or when Gil was explaining how Maine should had give him something to eat, but Maine countered it with perfect logic. While she understood that it was kinda her fault, Gil's behavior was problematic. In anime she just went "oh no, it's all my fault... *depression*"."

Yes, exactly! what the anime is doing can' even be excused by them having to leave stuff out due to lack of space, what they are doing is butchering the story and changing stuff for no good reason. Episode 6 is a good exaample

The discussion about Lutz's future in the LN waas, in my eyes, a brilliant illustration of how High Priest handles contentious issues and how he hears all sides of the story. Lutz's father ,Benno and Lutz were pressed to present their side of the story, their viewpoints and the reasoning behind it, and the specific points of contentions that are present. He especially presses Lutz's father who is not very outspoken. How is it portrayed in the anime? As a family drama high on emotion but making no coherent sense and throwing away all logical arguments. Not only that, for some reason Lutz's father chooses to keep completely quiet when the High Priest, a Noble, questions him. In this heavily stratified society, such rude behaviour from a commoner to a Noble is basically suicide. Seriously that episode was the worst

Not to mention even with limitations of adapting such detailed series to 1 or 2 cour, there is an art of choosing what to show and what to skip. And that art is not visible in season 2 of the anime. Seriously the anime sucks

@Fuyuqi from Volume 3 of the LN(Mark's POV SS)

“But why does Myne know all that? She only spent a few days in the guildmaster’s house. Why does she know so many different kinds of recipes? How does she know so many recipes that need an oven?”

“Because she is Myne.” I responded to Master Benno’s question with a sigh. He didn’t look satisfied, but that was the only answer.

“Mark, y’know...”

“Thinking about it will only be a waste of time. It does not matter who Myne truly is if we can use her knowledge for profit. You said so yourself when she brought us the rinsham. Rethinking that strategy won’t change the situation we are in. It would be much more constructive to plan out ways to stop Myne from leaking valuable information elsewhere,” I said with a shrug. Master Benno looked away awkwardly, then clapped his hands to change the subject.

If anyone is wondering what was up with the cooks reactions, here's my take:

Myne is actually putting them in an extremely difficult position. On one hand, she's acknowledged their skills which should be met with gratitude. On the other hand, she is a noble which means they cannot talk so casually to her, especially since she was talking to Benno and not them.

So what do they do? Ignore her comment and come off as rude? But then if they said thanks, they'd be talking directly to a noble, which is also a faux-pas in this world. Thankfully Benno gave them a way out and let them know "You're allowed to acknowledge her comments this time."

At least, that's how I picked up on it. In the light novel, I don't think they ever directly addressed what Myne did wrong. The courtesy rules of this world are pretty odd.

It's like trying to have lunch, with a pet dog breathing down the nape of your neck and drooling. That tense.

Ooh. More nitty gritty character development and details.
Thanks for the chapter

I was worried that, now that the anime is well passed this point in the manga, there wouldn't be much to these chapters. I'm happy that there's a lot of more information and details that weren't present in the anime.
