Having read the light novel, I don't think anyone could guess the actual answer to the mystery. It's a weird and kind of convoluted one.
I really liked the whole setup for this arc in the LN, where it all happens during the race and the previous chapters are Oreki having flashbacks or asking questions to his friends while running, instead of awkward recaps of things we've seen.
