Lovely trope, isn't it?
"'Light' is not always 'good'"

@Lament
It was just a single small incursion meant to grab some ground, not actually fight. You saw how few soldiers there were.

@esmee_n101 hot takes from these people are always dumb istg. im from asia, se asia more specifically, so i know for a fact that there is colorism/racism in asia. my aunt worked in japan, and shes pretty light skinned already but they still discriminated against her for not being japanese/having slightly darker skin. to this day, she still uses skin lightening lotions and products so yeah i know full well that this is racist. thanks for being so nice and having intellect tho! we love to see it 💖 🙌🏽

@katojana as for you, if you could spare half the braincells learning reading comprehension, i literally said
yall clowns acting like the setting of the story is an excuse
the mangaka is not from the renaissance, they are not from the 1500s. they are from modern times with access to google and modern tools to use. the lightening of skin is shitty story telling/accidental racism at best, and malicious colorism at worst. stop trying to lick they boots, they dont pay for your bills

@crazybars sorry to bring you into this, but the okinawan/ryuukyuan people are also discriminated against as they are an ethnic minority in japan as a result of japanese colonialism over the area. its not just americans applying politics to the japanese (which, yes, does happen but also im asian so i have a stake in this), its the fact that even japanese activists know that this is a bad take considering the history that japan had/has with ethnic minorities/darker skinned people in the country. just trying to tell you, not tryna be actively malicious or anything. hope that that at least helps.

...2 people will go against the enemy camp while the WHOLE ARMY is going to take the captives? WTF!? Shouldn't it be the opposite? XD

Ugh!

I loved the chapter, even if her neck looked really weird during some of those side shots, but I'm really sad to see that cover. She looks fine the way she is! I still think it's a stupid move that pretty much makes everything before it pointless.

Also people saying Japan doesn't, you know, erase any skin tone but pure blinding snow white are fooling themselves. If you guys are here then you've consumed enough media to come across a scene where someone is compared with someone else and one of them is mentioned as having "super duper pretty pale skin" while the bad person has "slightly darker, ugh so rough and ugly" skin. Just look at all the skin bleaching products that come out of Japan, China, and Asia. They are just as bad as America in that sense, but they have a much greater cultural focus on conformity which...yeah. Doesn't improve the situation any.

@chuchuchoerr

That's more about Colonial Imperial Japan and the caste system still have massive lasting negative influences. That, they actually care about. *Younger Japanese generations, increasingly less so, but let's not go there.

Very few Japanese citizen cares much about Skin color because that's just not a thing there. Because all foreigners who aren't Japanese and don't look Japanese are discriminated against instantly.. They don't give a shit about appearing PC because they don't care. They also discriminate against ugly people, fat people, whatever. That's a real thing btw, look it up.

You find really weird shit like this no effort example I found.

In February 2015, Ayako Sono, a former member of an education reform panel, wrote a controversial column in Sankei Shimbun suggesting that more foreign workers be imported to meet labor shortages, but that they be separated from native Japanese in a system of apartheid.[84][85][86][87] She later explained "I have never commended apartheid, but I do think that the existence of a ‘Chinatown’ or ‘Little Tokyo’ is a good thing.

Western ideas are called "western" for a reason. You start spamming those ideas in Japan, you get funny looks because they're not taught those ideas in school except maybe parts of Tokyo. But Tokyo is a major outlier.

Same as others, i think the whitewashing is really unecessary.
I can see what the author wanted to show with this, but i don't think it is really a good idea.

And you can already see in this chapter she don't really need it, after all her actions speak for her, and she is already liked by others people even if her skin is dark.

And you gotta admit, she's really cute like that, it's a bit of a waste.

Wow, i thought this would be filled on discussion of the chapter not whitewashing. Idc whether japan does it at this point because I am just here to consume media. Im sick of all the fucking politics in modern media. Is it wrong yes, does it happen yes, do I care no. If you do thats fine but honestly im fed up. Japan can go too far in certain topics yes but I like that they dont restrain themselves to PC shit. Its refreshing when all of western media is being as safe as possible.

Total spoiler
In the light novel the whitewashing actually makes things more uncomfortable for the MC. The light spirit even apologizes for the change as it’s an unintended side effect of her blessing. All of a sudden she has tons of marriage proposals and tea party invitations and she rightfully suspects everyone that suddenly sucks up to her. Her friends and the prince are the only ones she trusts and she just puts up with everyone else out of obligation. She writes off her parents and even after they try and reconcile because they didn’t even try to stop the rumors and fear until after she got the light blessing.
It does help her recognize the prince’s feelings as genuine however and helps move the romance along. It does make her more discerning when she gets eventually becomes queen as well.

@ParagonNight I don't care that much because I mean, I'm used to all kinds of nasty ideas in manga; you let a certain amount of crap slide or you don't read manga. This is no worse than the massive sexism or the unthinking acceptance of authoritarianism that crop up all the time. The mindset of (most) Japanese is different on these issues, and not in a good way, but some of the stories are good so at least up to a point you set it aside.

But your stuff about "PC" or being "safe" is completely backwards. In the Japanese context, they are being safe. They're not being dicks to bravely resist some kind of PC hordes, they're being dicks because it's the safe way to go along to get along, because they fear sticking to a dark skinned heroine would be difficult or controversial or cost sales. Not that "because PC people would hate it" is a good reason to be a dick. "Hey, I'll go kick the shit out of a beggar because the liberal PC crowd would get upset!"--that's moronic.
