Erm, I actually don't mind they change it back but... There's no explanation or whatsoever why they change it back so I get confused. Like keep her white for several chapters it's fine then she suddenly says "I miss darker skin" and has her go tan or something.

Or did I miss a chapter or something?

@comedyxtraged They published another version of the previous chapter where she doesn't get the white skin. The chapter seems to have received a lot of criticism (imo, I don't know how the author didn't think about it beforehand)

Our poor baby girl finally found some happiness. Well, she made it for herself, but she finally accepted the happiness she made.

Good on the prince's confession too. I think the timing was fair, and the attitude was respectful. Her reciprocation was a bit rushed though.
Even if she developed affection for him and didn't realize, I think it'd be fair to let her emotional stuntedness brew a little more. Maybe they can go on a date or two.

Wow, a lot of people didn't know about the color change backlash and got confused. My impression is that it was Japanese audiences that did the backlash though. I can't imagine western ones affecting their decision much.

I personally like it like this because she simply looks more unique among other otome villainesses with her skin color. Woulda also been acceptable to make it a hair color change instead, but I would rather have no change at all since it would still sorta give a poor message on a meta level.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't she receive a blessing that made her skin pale?

@RiseOne
The publisher did a reprint so she no longer has a pale skin. Aparently that chapter where she got her white skin was very criticized

wait so they redacted the whitewashing? That's not a bad thing, but I feel like they would've done that in the LN if they were gonna do it at all

@Rugoru This work isn't even licensed in English. I find it hard to believe the Japanese publisher would have cared about the few foreigners buying the work in Japanese, let alone the pirates reading it illegally. The Japanese themselves must have complained about it enough for the publisher to make the change. It's pretty self-centered from you to think everything in the world happens because of the West.

Why not just white and dark versions of each chapter? Isn't there a white version of the chapters anymore??

I'm assuming the person who was smiling at the end was
Ronald since he didn't appear in the novel before.

Damn, she stopped a whole battle by herself but couldn't shake off a single dude who grabbed her and had to be saved by the prince....

@Rodvus Just like the dark spirit king explained, if she did use her powers to deal with him, then rumors about her "abusing" her power would circulate. The dark spirit king doesn't want to intervene especially since Claudia's public opinion has started to improve after getting the light spirit king's blessing.

Funny the manga tried to make a pretty good point about discrimination and how shallow people are about things like skin color with the "whitewashing" part and the twitter crowd (who would care the most about this sort of thing) completely miss the point and scream about the whitewashing anyway.

My two cents about the skin issue: as an Asian living in an Asian country, the colour of the skin is less about racism (which is usually the topic in the West), but more about colourism.

For centuries, Asian mindset had always been "pale = beauty and high class". That's why the ancient Chinese and Japanese always painted women's faces white. Even in Japan, there is the whole gyaru fashion trend which is pointedly about NOT having white skin, as a form of retaliation against the norm; and because of that feature, Japanese culture paints any gyaru as a delinquent. That was also why the promotional cover of this manga showed a pale version of the MC as well, because they still believe that "dark skin does not sell".

In India (which is a predominantly brown-skinned country), colourism is so bad that they only have pale-coloured cosmetics for women, and all of the female faces you see in Indian movies and TV shows are pale as heck.

Point is, the backlash is partly because of many centuries of judging a person's character and beauty based on their skin colour. And yes, this series was meant to be a statement of that kind of stigmatisation of dark skin that pretty much exists in all parts of the world. And yes, her skin turning pale, which then made everyone accept her, would be a good way of adding to the theme... But the implication now is that this is NOT the end of the story. If they continued the manga with a fair-skinned FL they would ironically be playing into the whole "fair skin = beauty/good" colourism, the very thing that they are trying to critique.

IMO the smartest move would have been to make a whole arc out of this, with the MC deciding, by her own choice, to keep her darker skin, and also show how the people around her come to respect her and judge people aside from their skin colour. But considering that this is a pretty sensitive topic, I think the author wanted to play it safe and just pretend it never happened and move on.
