To me that's the biggest issue, I actually don't mind drama or tonal shifts if done right. But to feed people 7+ months of romcom and then just shift this poorly is bad writing, even if people point out the poorly written hints through the first chapters.Remember when this was an 8.0 fluff romcom? Good times...
I think it's more that people were here for the fluff and the autor whiplashed them. If they wanted a drama, they would have gone elsewhere. The problem with this manga is that it's kinda realistic and people are too stuck up in their fantasy land hoping for your prince or princess to come to you virgins. You'll realise that these characters in here are neither in the wrong nor right hikari and yuu were too cowardly to confess to each other Yami came in and though her intentions weren't pure it's understandable even after all she's gone through
Ps- this story ain't for everyone but if you look at it realistically you'll understand the characters more idk try to see it on another light

Frankly I was reading a tsundere romcom the other day and thinking how refreshing it was that Hikari lost as a direct consequence of turning him down, as they often do without consequence.Lol I mean end in the most literal sense not trying to be deep or anything. I don't see any way author makes a yami win feel satisfying since we've been with hakari since day 0 and yami just showed up but we shall see. Cheers
Many people stated before this buy just to clarify for you yami did not know that mmc is fmc crush. They didn't refer to his real actual name just a nickname and I think maybe his first name which is not enough to know who exactly it is. Now I 100% agree with you if they don't come clean about it now that she saw the kiss.Huh i went back to chapter 21, and i realized that ayami refers to mmc as her former boyfriend. That means they did offically date for some time period. She never told FMC did she? thats what makes her a shitty friend. Yea I can understand those two being teenagers with baggage (really her baggage and the mmc is just honry), but to not tell fmc about your former relationship is fucked up. ISTG if FMC and MMC end up a couple, if FMC doesn't find out that those two have slept with eachother before they do anything, Imma be super pissed.
She been trying granted not the hardest. And this is not high school realism. I even know someone who was in a similar situation to yami very sad thing, what she did tho was get help and the bastard is in jail now and she did not decide to manipulate a stranger. None of this has been realistic quite frankly.Honestly, after this flashback ends, I'm just curious to see how FMC will respond. I mean, it's true she hadn't been really progressing their relationship, even after she realized her feelings, and that happened WAAAAAAAAY after MC lost his virginity to someone who wasn't even his first love.
As shitty as this story's progression has been going since that sudden reveal, putting aside that weird edgy red herring(?) of that bitch's home situation, there's this weird sense of realism for how some high school romantic/sexual relationships usually go being reflected in this arc.
Hold your horses buster. To me that's the biggest issue, I actually don't mind drama or tonal shifts if done right. But to feed people 7+ months of romcom and then just shift this poorly is bad writing, even if people point out the poorly written hints through the first chapters.
I actually don't see anything wrong with the current backstory either if this was paced correctly. But because it is so poorly written and paced, it doesn't hit right. Yami is just an awfully written character, but it also shines a light on how awful the story is as a whole now, which makes it deserve it's current rating.
I actually like garbage and even poorly written garbage if the story is fun.
But this story is neither fun or really that interesting anymore.
It's not realistic, in reality most relationships are quite mundane. You conveniently forget that yami took her traumatic home situation and instead of getting help ran to manipulate a stranger. I know a girl who was in yamis situation, she got help the bastard is in jail and she didn't manipulate a stranger. See the issue. If you look at it realisticly yami is a bad person and mmc is pathetic. So yes yami is in the wrong.

What chapter did hikari turn him down I must've missed it.Frankly I was reading a tsundere romcom the other day and thinking how refreshing it was that Hikari lost as a direct consequence of turning him down, as they often do without consequence.
This. Flawed characters are not bad characters. You may not like them as people but they can become the focus of an engaging story. They don't even need to redeem themselves. You can learn from their mistakes. You can't predict what they will do next. And they add an air of relatability since no one is perfect as a manga MC in most cases. Even certifiably immoral characters can become a means to send a broader message about human nature and society. Just look at my user name. I love them. I'm not sure this is well-written at this point but I don't judge the stories on the fact that a character does something immoral.Hold your horses buster.
The story did not go the way you wanted, but that doesn't mean it's badly written.
You, just like a lot of people here is letting your frustations speak first and foremost.
Now, I agree the pacing right now is kinda shit, but the characters are in no way badly written just because they're flawed as people.
The story is pretty much on the make it or break it point, what Hikari is going to do after seeing her best friend kissing the guy she likes is going to set in stone if the mangaka is cooking or not.
