I'm guessing when the guy's fiddling with his phone, he's in fact texting yami

The fucking nuclear reactions if we get perspective flips on those early chapters and learn that dude always had Yami on his mind while Hikari was simping for him. lol

Actually I'm going back now and there's exactly two moments he was locked in with his phone, Chapter 1 and Chapter 16. Chapter 16 he got super pissy out of nowhere when Hikari started leaning on him too, so I wouldn't be surprised if Yami dumped him via text then. Very next chapter was the one where Hikari invited him to her school festival and he was being really cagey about not wanting to go but wouldn't say why.

So I'm guessing that Yami tried to ghost him the second she realized Hikari was the same mystery girl all along.

Wow, Ayami was 'fixed' by love, and now she’s MOTIVATED—what innovative storytelling... Truly original; I’ve never seen anything like it before...

Anyway, what I’m most curious about is why it took Ayami so long to realize that Hikari was the girl Yuu was pursuing. Here’s an excerpt from the latest chapter of the novel that delves deeper into a point, which was only briefly mentioned in this chapter of the manga:

At some point, Ayami returned to school, and Hikari became, in her own words, her “best friend.” So how did Ayami not connect the dots? Were there really so many girls fitting the information Yuu gave her that she didn’t even consider the possibility it might be Hikari?

Thanks for the chapter!
Maybe he didn't say anything, that's the point. And when Yami found out that her boyfriend is the crush and CF of Hikari, her best friend, her dreams of just being a normal high school girls without drama got shattered. Also Yuu not telling Hikari he had girlfriend from the beginning started this, maybe that's why the slap in Chapter 21.

I keep asking myself where is the NTR people keeps talking about. Must be some Mandela Effect or something like that.
It's the same way people use "gaslighting." Insert Princess Bride Meme: "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

People just like throwing terms around they think is right without actually checking the applicability. Shrug.

Editor who force all authors to have multiple love interests finally reaping what they sowed. In their mind it’s just appealing to more people, “why have one girl when you can have a Gyaru, Onee-sans, Tsunderes as well?”

More appeal means more sales… right? So around chapters 11-14, in almost every single RomCom in the past decade, a 2nd love interest gets inevitably introduced. Usually of contrasting personality, (99% are dark haired broody chicks tho)

This alone should have significantly reduced the number of potential candidates, and as mentioned in the novel, Ayami asked all sorts of questions, so it's reasonable to assume he answered some of them.

oh god, we know that they break up eventually, so let me guess, they breakup cus shes keeps getting jealous of fmc who she hasn't even met yet and becomes too clingy, but because Yuu keeps talking about fmc all the time, Ayami is able to transfer to the same school as fmc, prolly bc she blackmails her father or something, becomes friends with fmc, and gets info about yuu to try to win him back, which will bring us back to the present where fmc sees them kissing, or really seeing ayami forcing a kiss on yuu.

That's probably better written than what we're going to get.

Hikari joined the school where Ayami was already studying...

There's a lot of students who are good in academics in a particular school and well she did connect the dots at some point, i think maybe on chapter 12 with the Yuu/Taa-kun kanji. What i (assume) it happened was that Yami got over her insecurities like she said on this chapter, that she needs to work on herself more and stopped asking about "her". In the WN she doesn't know anything about "her" : "I don’t know her name, what middle school they attended together, or even her approximate address."

The author has to have an extremely good excuse and/or writing skill to explain why these two didn't stick together, breaking the REAL female MC's heart and essentially hijacking the whole premise because there's no easy way to fix this.

We'll find out after this flashback ends and we get back to realtime...
