Because he knew she was never interested in dating him. She herself says it as well. You guys are assuming if he asks Hikari would say yes, her answer would have been no, and they both know it. Why bother confessing if you know the answer beforehand?
My main point is that it doesn't really matter. Personally, I'm a bit disappointed in his performance, but it's fine either way. I don't think we can even consider him a subject, with his lack of agency and things just constantly happening to him. Until he gets his own arc, he's just a catalyst for the conflict between two heroines.

Just furthering your point; the manga was never focused on Yuu, he's just a mere a plot device. This is entirely focused in the two main characters that are Hikari and Yami. Some people haven't realized this.

What effort to get involved again are you talking about? If you're talking about Hikari visiting Yuu in his room every day, they've been doing that since elementary school.
They stopped hanging out around the time when he started studying for her school - Hikari has a thought bubble about it at the fireworks festival when the friends talk about how everyone thought they were dating.

No they continued to hang out. Hikari in chapter 4 just notes that in the last six months before the high school entrance exams that their situation was reverse.

I opened the east-facing window that had been shut for ages, but there was nothing to see beyond it.
Just a couple of meters away, right in front of me, was the window of a room in the Takamura house next door, blocking any view.

......Yeah, it's Ta~kun's room, where I spend most of my time.

Back in middle school, the view from my room was always the same.
His desk, his bed, his bookshelf... and him, my childhood friend, just living his life in there.

In the mornings, he'd still be snoozing long after I was ready for school.
And at night, he'd be fast asleep, snoring as usual, as I stayed up late studying.

Well, about six months before high school entrance exams, our roles kinda flipped, I started seeing a hardworking yet slightly laid-back boy in my window.

And yet, back then, I didn't think too much about this privilege that only next-door childhood friends have

Hikari has a thought bubble about it at the fireworks festival when the friends talk about how everyone thought they were dating.
I reread chapter 17 and that thought bubble doesn't appear. Are you talking about Chapter 16 the cafe double date?

Thought so but apparently got that wrong (I wonder if I got some of the discussions jumbled up) :/

Am now wondering if she suspected he had a girlfriend - b/c then they would have been hanging out when he was w/ Aya - and that's why she asks if the Kouhai was his ex.

But also curious, where do you all get the chapter translations?

Many people are willimg to die for a caring GF like her tbh. The only thing stopping her from bring the only sensible ship with Yuu is her family mental problem.

The way she shows care - the hyper affection, the sex, the flirtiness to deflect from anything that causes conflict or that could veer into being demanding- that all stems from her family mental problem, so like Aya dealing with her family issues and mental health might mean that Aya starts showing care in a different way.

But also in all earnestness, if you think that she's caring, how do you reconcile her ghosting?

ETA: I'm also thinking about how Hikari's timeline is a year out from the break up and Aya seems to be in a much better place mentally & still somewhat into Yuu and as far as the reader knows she never tried to apologize or get back together w/ him in the like 9? months between breaking up and finding out he's Hikari's crush.

Because she's interested she decided that Aya is worth the effort. She could have decided that despite her interest Aya was too much work. She could have decided that Aya's actions meant Aya wasn't interested in being her friend and noped out.
I think we ended up discussing hypotheticals anyway, because we don't even know if she would've reached out to Yami or not. But now that she ran into her, they are going to talk without regard to her final decision.
Eh, like the getting angry and pouty and the like is her conveying how important this really is to her.
Getting angry is not a conscious decision for most people. And in her case it's clearly not something she consciously decided to do since she is actively regretting it, but can't stop.
he could have also pacified her feelings by answering her questions about why he doesn't want to go.
Do you seriously believe his honest answer would've pacified her?
She makes her next chance by inviting Yuu out again. Waiting would be waiting for him to invite her.
Semantics again. She postpones her confession by deciding to not do it now but some time in the future instead. And it's the same thing with every indecisive protagonist trying to confess ever - they all try to create new situations to confess only to fail another time.

But also curious, where do you all get the chapter translations?

So been thinking in this more and that it's probably more supposed to be a contrast with Aya (not Yuu) anyway. Hikari is failing at doing Aya's "oh nevermind, it's not a big deal" act.

What led to her showing all the frustration is that when Yuu initially said no she pushed back with questions and then pushed back more & ended up at too invested too pull back. Which is a contrast with Aya, who deflects at like the first no so that she won't get to to the frustrated messy state.

Do you seriously believe his honest answer would've pacified her?

Yes? In chapter 17 she literally thinks that his confession about not feeling worthy is not what she was hoping to hear, but she thanks him for sharing w/ her.

they all try to create new situations to confess only to fail another time.
Yuu doesn't.

ETA: let's accept the hypothetical of his feelings weren't romantic, or that he fell head over heels with Aya, even then the only thing we're told he tried to be on par with Hikari is the entrance exam. No trying to beat her quiz scores or get on the exam leaderboard with her or best her at a festival - none of the staples of a high school rivalry. And it would have been an extra sentence " I felt unworthy of you so I tried to improve my grades but I couldn't make it on the top 100 in the fall or spring so then I tried to get into the same school"

Thanks!

I disagree with a lot of people in these comments and have since the original big kiss/twist. This manga's good. Really good. I'm sad people can't see that. I understand it's not what they wanted, but they're also choosing to continue reading out of spite and ire instead of just moving on. Funnily, they're acting a just as moody and dramatic as the characters in the manga and for a lot less reason.

I'm also not on "Team Yami" or "Team Hikari". I just want to see them all slowly work through their mental and emotional wounds and hopefully reach a point where they're all happy.

Can speak this from personal experience, she doesn't want to drag him down with her, so in a kind of twisted way, she loves him so bad she wants him to get away from a ticking bomb which is herself. Re-read the part where she parted away with him, she states that she hopes he will have a better future without her in it. I know it's hard for someone who is not in her mindset to not get what she thinks, but for those who do, it hits hard.

Yep exactly, this is a very good manga. The author has to set up Hikari that way as a red herring, so the twist could work. I feel sorry for those who read this and were expecting something else, and I honestly understand their hate. But for those who like you and me, this is a gold.
