So she's just the main character for the rest of the manga right?

It's really hard to have a drama featuring a character like Ayami and not have it seem like she's a main character, because the girl is Drama.

I don't think the story is meant to be enjoyed as an invested competition between them over who wins the boy or is 'best girl' or whatever, so much as how the three of them interact and shape each other and how that dynamic changes as things play out.

So why did we have the first 21 chapters start the series? So we could know exactly what was going to happen ahead of time and be disappointed in how we got there?

There is no suspense, there is bad character development, and whichever character isn't present in the current arc we care less and less about them.

It just feels like this is a lesson in how not write a story properly.

The mistake here is the perspective not the story, this story makes much more sense as a light novel than a manga. Making the story a flashback while risky, I don't think is its biggest flaw. The way the story is cut, positioned and presented is where it lacks, but that's my optimism that later on the climax and resolve would make sense. Maybe if that chapter where Hikari saw Yama kiss the male deutegonist would have been better to be a first, then the whole development background behind them, and then involve these interactions between them two, AND after that the first 20 chapters, this would have been better.

Yeah, I was thinking about this too, and even more than the medium, I feel like the problem is serialization and letting the reader's knowledge of the plot pass out of short term memory and their understanding of structure and characters to solidify incorrectly. It's so jarring this way, when the twists and comparisons require a kind of fluidity to enjoy properly.

Clearly the author was going for the bait-and-switch 'we interrupt your romantic comedy to bring you a romantic drama' effect to lob a cannonball at readers expecting another light and fluffy childhood friend experience. That requires Hikari's bit to come first so it can shatter us as much as it does her, and that's hard to reconcile with the most effective way to tell the WHOLE story. The manga author leans even further into this by using familiar love-status-quo tropes and an initially 4-koma format to lull readers into expectations of familiarity with how it's all going.

If this series were released as a completed novel or manga, I think I wouldn't put it down until I finished, and the timeline issues would be much easier to overlook. Even if we know the middle of the story before the halfway point, I feel like there's still plenty of drama in the journey along the way. Really hope it delivers.

My sincerest hope right now is that neither of the girls' stories are the ones that 'matter' in the end, and that the last section of the story is focused on the male lead's experience over a broader time period that amounts to something like the woodcutter's testimony from Rashomon.

Well, as pranks go - not the worst. I once was walking home at about 11 pm on december 29, slightly drunk, saw a police car drive by, when bam, on the ground, in cuffs, on a back seat, one of the cops radioes "yeah, we got the MF from the BOLO" (not direct quote but translated the best it can be), police precinct, interrogation room, I am in it for 15 minutes only to see couple of my cop acquaintance walk in with keys and a crate of "confiscated" champagne, turns out their mates, who grabed me off the street, saw and recognized me walking (i've been to that precinct, well many times, does not matter), radioed this jackasses and the rest of the night was drinking.

While you're story is great (it was really funny) I'm pretty sure involuntary child rape is the worst it can get.

I think bit of context missing: country is russia, hell of a lot of scary stories about cops and police brutality, BOLO basically means they caught someone who is either supposed to be dangerous or done some shit and "enhanced interrogation" was a thing when. oh, and there is no reading right attorney or a call, like in those american movies, things might've become really fucked really quick.

(now it's a lot different, but when scared shitless was how I felt)
