I may be completely off base here but I can't help but feel like this story is about to end. We are only 5 chapters into the 3rd volume and we are about to go back to the present (allegedly).

I'm probably just looking too much into this and am probably off base but it doesn't feel like there is much story left.

Just to complement this - after getting held back a year in February (chapter 22) and until September, Yami continued to skip classes, that's why she only met Hikari in chapter 31 for the first time.

Okay I think I can see problem I had with my thought process. In February Yami was already skipping school for few months prior, and that's why she said that "she comeback to school after a year" when she meet Hikari for the first time. I always thought that she started skipping school just around the time when she meet Yuu in February and it didn't made sense to me that she came back to school after a year, when it was actually half a year

Not sure if you understood already or not, but just in case.
In chapter 22 she is 16. In chapter 30 (break up) she becomes 17, so her birthday is around late July or early August. In chapter 21, which takes place in September of the next year, she is already 18.

This is based on a novel apparently, tho idk if the JP side of the audience is also fond of it, despite the manga adaptation then again it's possible the artist did it b/c they got paid/personally like it as opposed to like a lot of views from the audience (or i guess maybe ragebaiting still gets views)

I can't imagine hikari agreeing tho/she's unlikely to be bi versus 'sharing' the love interest but outside of harem romcoms i don't think there'd be many 'throuple/polycule' ends that'd work out in the long run (i wonder if there are like poly couples in their 50s in japan even among the lgbt crowd)
