You're correct about I am who isn't Native English speaker since I live in Malaysia/Indonesia (my place is close to border).
But when it comes for asking destination, we usually saying like this "It's only about 10 minutes to go there" which is more accurate than "It's only about 10 minutes drive" which is a bit confusing if they didnt asking for location 1st since that sentence is incomplete.

But yeah, Native English speakers most of time shorten their words to make it easier, but for Non-Native like me is so weird to hear that words since it feels incomplete.

@hartex92 In this case the group is heading to mt Akina, the only place worth racing around there. “Because it’s only about a 10 minute drive” in the following bubble gives more context, as the implication is that mt. Akina is the default local racing spot not because of how fun it is but rather that the other famous mountains worth racing on require a much longer traveling time than just ten minutes. Also in urban Japan according to one survey, only 7% of students and 24% of workers commute by car. Iketani offering a driving time estimation makes sense as most people wouldn’t have a good grasp of the driving time.

@Lexical Ah, so that's what he meant by 10 minutes drive to Mt.Akina (aka Mt.Haruna in real world) because the estimated time by going there with cars and for students that had cars are very rare due the Price itself was expensive in 1st place, even with AE86 itself was 300k Yen which is already 10 years old in their era (1996-1997).
Thanks for the explanation about what Iketani means when asking by Yuichi (his boss)
