You're correct about I am who isn't Native English speaker since I live in Malaysia/Indonesia (my place is close to border).
But when it comes for asking destination, we usually saying like this "It's only about 10 minutes to go there" which is more accurate than "It's only about 10 minutes drive" which is a bit confusing if they didnt asking for location 1st since that sentence is incomplete.
But yeah, Native English speakers most of time shorten their words to make it easier, but for Non-Native like me is so weird to hear that words since it feels incomplete.
