I heard that slavery wasn't that profitable because you needed to take care of them (even to the point most owners cared about their slaves compared to their family --of course since they made money for him) and the wage workers were (and are) more profitable for the business, so that's why the slavery law was abolished (don't know about in US).
Well take a grain of salt for this because I might be wrong.

In regard to The Church...

Yes, burn it to the ground.
The rot goes all the way to the top, there's nothing left to save.
Anyone who attempts to do so from inside is punished, attempts from outside will be ineffectual so long as the membership of the hierarchy remains the same, and too many of the rank and file have bought into their attitudes.
Tear out the whole structure, root and branch.

if there really is a goddess of her name out there, she'll get a new church started soon enough.
Then she can demonstrate if she really supported the current hierarchy, or if they were acting against her wishes, based upon the behaviour of the new church.

I really don't like this mc's personality. Read the novel but his personality and attitude just keeps on rubbing me the wrong way. The very definition of a hypocritical doormat mc. It doesn't make things better that the author lets his own real life opinions bleed through into the mc.

The manga was supposed to be better because it's more shallow and quicker to read, but while it is indeed a bit better, it's still average, part of this is due to the kinda subpar art that doesn't bring across the emotions properly. It's boring to look at.

Well, whatever.

You shouldn't burn the church down. What would that gain you? You'd be labeled a terrorist for no benefit.

@Kaarme : The benefit of seeing the church on fire? The benefit of there being fewer priests? C'mon... burning a church down is its own reward.

I think burning the church down might be a good plan here, personally...

To be fair, that was a pretty clever way for those cheapskates to get out of paying them.

I'm sure plenty of people don't understand this, but he's not responsible for her screwing up. That she didn't think things through and wasn't open with her superiors is her own fault, same for the extra conditions she put on the contract. He doesn't owe her anything and it is wrong of her to burden him with her mistakes. It isn't "right" or "good" or anything like that for him to take her in. Especially when he's still basically flat-broke. In fact, how did they even pay for the food and rooms they've used thus far?

That said, it would have been smarter to accept her since he intends to be an adventurer and so her powers would be very helpful in that. A later panel has her comment that her holy power is sealed, but he didn't know that...and then immediately also learns that he was right, she did indeed not tell them about the contract and they would indeed have probably paid it instead.

Then the clumsy, idiotic writing kicked it up a notch again with her former boss acting like he lost his chance to have her after the contract payment was accepted even though he'd just indicated that it was too late for him anyway. Even if the mangaka is just making it up as he goes (which he doubtless is), that is pretty scatterbrained writing.

After reading this chapter I came to the conclusion: MC, Evil Priest and the Author all share the same single brain cell they have left.
