Surprisingly needed fluff. This was a great reality check for ilyas that will help her stay grounded. Also a good lesson to us all, the opposite of love is apathy not hate. For someone to hate you means there's at least some care and a relationship there. Beyond that without knowing the reasons behind someone's behavior we just automatically go toward the worst thoughts. The powers of social observation and just talking to people go a really long way in improving how we feel about ourselves (namely because it weakens the monsters of self doubt we let fester).

The world isn't exactly that ignorant. It's just not nearly as bad as the modern world about it so the schemes don't sink quite as deep yet.

He's just intelligent and highly observant. Good at talking, like you noted. He also has the psychological trait of being able to step into the shoes of other people, to see things their way. I suppose you could say natural talent in psychological profiling. His own personality/ego (perhaps also morality) is kind of flimsy, though, so he's constantly in danger of slipping down onto dark paths when dealing with crooks and villains.

There's nothing particularly wrong about the world. It's a world of magic/supernatural skills, so people have the option to use raw power to have their way, so a weakling only using his brain and manipulation is, perhaps, a little bit unusual.

She really is one of my favorite knight designs. The heavy armor contrasted with the billowing cape and long hair, makes each panel with her a treat to the eyes. I'm sure the artist is having fun with it too. Todd McFarlane should learn from this and see you can have such characters and also have a story at the same time, and not just draw Spawn aura farming for half of a chapter.

Raelza is still better though.

As others mentioned he's got Batman-level intelligence and analytical skills, with a Machiavellian mindset. He knows how to manipulate people into doing what he wants.

At the very least I appreciate the trope break, rival knight with a problematic attitude is not a cartoonish evil fool that hates women for a petty reason.
