The guards are OTHER kids, and instead of sending Tanaka to tell them "hey fuckos turn around NOW" he just goes to the mc, ANOTHER KID. Principal and teachers ARE doing a bad job and sending them to die. You can blame kids on being teenagers doing stupid decisions but they are the adults that are in charge and supposed to stop them.

In games, you don't die when you're killed (SAO and clones aside), so that mentality is suicidal for real life.

Just too real. Just saw a video talking about how it's "not safe" to put a bollard to protect people from cars because that might cause injuries to drivers driving off the street, but it's safe to put a park bench there, because it'll only slow the car down so the driver will have a lower risk of getting injured for their reckless driving. No care whatsoever is given to the people on the street slowing the car down by dying.

Yeah, it was entirely within the Principal's power to do something entirely different.

Set the grades to only be recognized in the presence of Assassin guy

Offer strict punishments to those who treat the situation lightly and disobey the chain of command.

Have the principal himself join them to leave no doubt on authority.

Don't freaking implement a philosophy of "your life isn't our responsibility" on freaking minors AND play political games like twats.
