@Starbuck Actually it's around 3 years, Tetra was 10 at the start of the manga and is 13 now.
She learned Math for a while now and then Vodoo magic, as they mentioned vodoo magic comes by instinct so you could say she just combined what she learned with what she thought could work.

They say arithmetic but I think they mean geometry. And the math part is not really what gets me. It's that she discovered what symbols, shapes, and patterns create anything at all let alone narrowing it down to a specific effect through "a lot of trial and error". I mean that was a complicated pattern for a low tier spell.
