I don't think she was hoping for him to recover. She knows that the guy was an imposter (because they know about the shapeshifter). She hesitated because the guy looked like the person she cares about.

Calling her poison dagger a coincidence is the same as calling her job change a coincidence. Had she stayed a paladin, she would have been less likely to win even with a poisoned dagger. Everything was kinda all planned out - just not her plans.

I'm reminded of the old Realms of Arkania trilogy of games, where Warriors could use any weapon but had this weird code of honor preventing them from using poison. So you'd just have another character use poison on the weapon and give it to the warrior.

MC knows that a person's goodness is in equal measures of their naivete. He knew she would fuck up one way or another so he planned for it.

I love to hate and hate that I love characters like her. Too good for their own good, but a goodness that's usually most needed in their respective worlds....just a little more brains would be nice.

Well. it's basically one of zombie,ghost,possesion troupe. you knows your relative is already long gone but deep inside, you wished to save them so when the thing begged or "Wait!, it's me" with their face, you hestitated.

I said "you" as in character in those story btw, cuz some people have those "better end their misery" mindset so they probably won't hesitate in this scenario.
