I prefer characters to have substance, and I don't imagine myself as the protagonist in most fiction unless I'm crafting a character to play in an RPG, so I can't say I self-insert... that's probably why I'm so exasperated when I read an Isekai with a bland MC, I expect characters to have substance when they're literally designed to have the least substance possible.

I just don't understand why someone would want their fantasy to be as a fat, ugly, average and/or socially inept loser, shouldn't they want their self-insert to be the opposite?
