At first glance, this chapter might feel like just another filler chapter. But in truth, it offers real insight—especially into Hiromi’s internal struggles. It’s not just about him dealing with societal pressure to get married as he gets older. It also dives into Lilli’s perspective on love and marriage.
Lilli would rather have a comfortable life with someone she feels safe around than chase after something idealistic. That mindset explains a lot about her past decisions—particularly why she left Hiromi the moment things got complicated. She didn’t feel safe or secure in that relationship, so she walked away. Her idea of a perfect partner might look like Hiromi on paper, but that doesn’t mean he’s the one for her. Honestly, I’ve always felt they shouldn’t have gotten together in the first place. It was too soon. Hiromi had just gotten out of a relationship with Chika, and instead of rushing into something new, he should’ve taken time to reflect and grow.
Now, in this chapter, we’re seeing the effects of that emotional weight. Hiromi is overwhelmed—surrounded by people pushing him to be in a relationship, to get married, to start a family. It’s such a contrast to his mindset ten chapters ago, where he was the one craving that kind of future. After his breakup with Lilli and his return to Wakayama, he thought he could escape all that pressure. But life keeps pulling him back in.
And that’s where the double-edged sword comes in. On one hand, marriage and family are beautiful goals. On the other, letting the world around you decide your timeline can lead to disaster. If Hiromi jumps into a marriage just to please others, and it’s with the wrong person, it could fall apart just as fast. He needs to live for himself. That’s exactly what his grandmother was trying to tell him—she just wants him to be happy. Her only real fear is passing away and leaving him alone in the world. And that? That’s completely understandable.
But the real kicker in this chapter is Yukari.
Yukari is a woman with experience. When she reached for Hiromi’s hand, there was something powerful in that moment. Her presence alone could make a grown man melt. She’s been married before, and I think her being in the share house now is going to be an important lesson for Hiromi. She’s living proof that marriage isn’t always forever. It might start happy and end in heartbreak.
From the way she describes her previous relationship, it’s clear that her husband was emotionally distant. She wanted intimacy—holding hands, closeness, a real connection. But he kept her at arm’s length. Even something as simple as how he held her hand—no interlocking fingers—symbolized that distance. That’s probably why she ended up in the share house, rebuilding herself.
I’m just speculating, but I hope the next chapter digs deeper into her story. Either way, while I don’t see Hiromi and Yukari becoming a couple, I do believe she’ll become someone he deeply relies on for emotional support. She has wisdom he desperately needs.
But hey, that’s just my opinion.
