The reason why he's still getting involved is because he wants closure. He still thinks about her a lot. He has constant nighgmares about how their relationship ended. He can't form any loving relationships out of fear that they too will cheat on him. If he can understand WHY she cheated (joke or not) and dumped him, he can move on and not be haunted by feelings that everything will repeat itself.

MC is still a wet soggy noodle, typical "beta" trash without a spine Japanese MC. The maid girl seems a bit toxic based on earlier chapters, as far as she is the best looking one especially in the casual getup, I still think the kouhai is best girl out of them 3, but MC should get a brain and spine and become a normal human being and find a normal human girl to date outside the 3.

This is the part I don't get the most. he also wants to "immediately apologize" in this chapter too.
Come on man, out of all the situations in the relationship, the one thing that should never happened is for the party who was cheated on to apologize. It's not even about confidence, purely based on common sense and righteous indignation.
This kind of mentality is what really dampens my enthusiasm for a lot of manga recently. Just make characters who have a bare minimum of self-respect - just enough to treat themselves as human beings at least.

We know she's playing hard to get, but regardless of her intentions, she's putting all the barriers up so he'll continue chasing her. I had this done to me in the past, I tried to befriend this one girl that was romantically interested in me but she kept putting barriers expecting to break through all of them for her sake, but the only thing I did was stop trying because she had communicated that she didn't want me near her.

I only came to realize what she was doing years after the fact, and honestly, I dodged a bullet.
