So wtf do they think Beta is? Just another transformed Japanese who now has elf ear and suddenly don't know anything anymore?
Pretty much, I'm pretty sure they said in an earlier chapter that that kind of thing just happens to some people when they awaken to magical powers or something.

If human eating beasts started appearing and some people begun casting magic left and right, I wouldn't be surprised of anything anymore.

Although if we want to try making sense of it, since people who awoke to magic power seems to undergo some changes (which is why they accepted her silver hair and pointy ears), it might have also affected part of her brain that manages her memory and language skills.

Well...
Yes and no.
If we take the anime as a standalone version i would say it's not that bad.
But as a manga adaptation its bad like... really bad.
The anime is an adaptation of the LN, not the manga, and as such it's pretty faithful. Moreso than the manga, which focuses more on comedy. Both are good adaptations for different reasons.

As far as I know, the only time an anime has been based off the manga adaptation instead of the LN has been "That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime," where the producers openly stated they changed things to match the manga better.

This. I don't know how the LN is, but I love that the anime double down on the edginess while still keeping the comedy. It makes me really appreciate the contrast even more.

On the other hand, the manga double down on the comedy, yet somehow manage to keep it engaging. So yeah, both are good.
