well, it is a one shot but i'm imagine he used "suki" which can mean 'like' rather than like "aishite" but ppl fall in love fast in these kinda stories/maybe it's just part of japan culture to 'confess' first versus "let's grab a drink/dinner together"

Tho makes more sense in high school with teenage impulsiveness/someone crushing on someone in the same class (tho a bit awkward when it's someone in another class they never talk to b/c at that point it's more 'looks' based versus "this is the most popular student"/them having an amazing reputation at their age or so if it's not uncommon for ppl to shoot their shot to ppl they don't expect to say yes lol)
