She didn't even need to step in for his sake, but she noticed he was having trouble and did it anyway, maybe foiling whatever the ex-gf was planning to do. I'm going to take a wild guess and predict that the ex-girlfriend cheated because she misunderstood that MC's female friends were just his friends. I might even go a step further and say MC's non-romatic girlfriend actually purposefully lead her to believe that to separate them.
