Like Acolytus said, they're the artist who designs the vtuber's look and character model. "Mama" or "Papa" are both the accepted terms, depending on whether the commissioned artist is female or male.

As an example, IRyS of Hololive referred to her designer Redjuice as "Papa".

Why can't he also be a V-Tuber? It could be like a pair thing, which would also have the benefit of making them stand out more amongst the competitors. Having banter between their two characters is also a good way to give the streams some "meat" before they get a large enough following for stream chat interactions.

It's such a shame. I'm sure many male Vtubers are just as talented, but are kinda shoe-horned into the mold.

Isn't becoming a Vtuber pretty damn expensive? Even if they get the "mama" to design her character for free or for a favor, she'll either be a pngtuber or then need a "papa" to rig the model that can be even more expensive than the character, unless it's done for free or as a favor again. Then there's face-tracking, a decent enough computer and streaming set-up, etc. I mean, I know he's a big clipper for the girl that went on hiatus but this girl is in for a world of sticker shock unless there are plenty of conveniences heading their way.

VTube Studio is free to use with a $15 watermark removal option. Livestream software like OBS is free to use as well. So the only real costs here are the art fees for your character and the computer to stream off of. Depending on what kind of VTuber you're planning to be, the computer can be anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand USD, so the majority of your investment is there. The art depends mostly on the artist being hired, but IIRC unless you're getting someone who's a major name within the anime/manga/art scene, it's a few hundred or so.

TL;DR it's not as expensive as you think.

Model + rigging can very easily range into the thousands too (more than the PC at the higher end), but it's quite reasonable to start off with a cheaper/lower quality one and move up from there.

You guys forgetting that this guy has a youtube channel that has over 150k subs, I'm sure he's stacked with the money he is getting from his videos.
