Romantic false leads are one of the more common tropes in romcoms. I'm guessing that this guy won't amount to much after a few chapters. That said, I'm curious if this is going to just play it straight (with Nagai and Megumi not having any romantic attraction, and Shun just mistaking it) or if they'll do something wacky (like having Nagai more interested in Shun than her).

Did I mention the author would be better off drawing porn? Because these two latest chapters really drive that point home.

The mangaka DID draw porn, and still does on the side (mostly Idolm@ster stuff). That's how they started. A lot of doujinshi artists are graduating from porn to their own serializations, like Tosh with Shokugeki no Soma.

Shiori is the new main character because she just destroyed both of the leads.

Felt like this went down the shitter when "rivals" started appearing that amounted to nothing.

They are already in an established relationship though. Introducing rivals at all at this point would only serve to derail the story by creating unnecessary drama and conflict. I Honestly find it a bit refreshing to see this manga subvert such typical cliche's.

I meant that both rivals didn't trigger anything besides some momentary feelings of jealousy in both of them. They were only there for the cheap drama, just like most "rivals" in romance manga. I don't feel like this manga is subverting anything at all.

I somehow really like both Megumi and Shiori.
Also, this story is adorable.

Yeah, this manga does love rivalry in a decent way, short and blunt, without any "exploiting weaknesses" and stupid "misunderstanding" clichés.

I'm glad.

The objective of most rivals in romance manga is to serve as a roadblock, or to sabotage the main characters relationship entirely, often forcing the MC's into almost always contrived situations and dilemma's creating artificial drama in order to prolong the plot, while the "rivals", here, if they can even be called that in this manga, have done neither. Instead they have actually been quite helpful in helping the main characters recognize their own character flaws and shortcomings. So yes I do feel that the rival trope was subverted in this case, in fact it's probably more fair to say that there are simply no true rivals in this manga at all.

It's kind of nice to see some real discussion happening; I'd say I agree with Rozoro about this rival stuff.
