First girl is not a noble.

As for the second, she's the daughter of the 14th concubine, so they'll look down on her for that. We don't know from what echelon her mother is from, so there's that also. She doesn't act like a lady at all and she doesn't have much in the way of feminine pursuits (and even when she does, it's for plainly masculine reasons). She doesn't fit into the societal mold and therefore isn't doing what she is "meant" to do, and because she isn't doing what she's meant to do, this will naturally handicap her against someone who is conducting themselves properly.

You don't understand it because you aren't Japanese (I'm not either, and I also don't really understand why someone would think that way, but that's the way they think).
