Late 18th century invention really, in terms of clear and established positions and organisation. Some countries didn't adopt it until early 20th century even then.

Just once I'd like fantasy dragoons to be horse cavalry with long guns. Or if you want to keep the fantasy element, they could be mounted mages that cast long range spells from horseback. that would be rad as hell.
