Rather than being able to fit that role, it's whether or not you want to perform that role right? and later also whether or not the other person also wants you in that role right?

OK but if you wanna pretend that she's this average-looking plain chick two leagues below Lemon, then don't draw her as a hottie.
Less about that and more about how one's perception of themselves can shape their beliefs.

From the outside, a person can look extraordinary, amazing, and wonderful. On the inside, they probably feel anything but that.

It's very hard to be objective of yourself when all you believe is the story you tell yourself everyday.

this is her self-perception. We know she is cute, in fact we get right there how she gets called cute, she just compares herself to others and to Lemon specially. This isn't the author telling us "she is average looking" this is the author showing us how Natsumi thinks of herself.

The whole point of confessing. I prefer asking someone to hang out for increasingly situations until they say no., defining the boundary of our relationship, or we're already dating. Large party -> group outing -> small group outing -> unintentional double date -> two of us non-date activity -> date activity as bros -> date -> date -> date -> date -> explain to them we're dating if they haven't caught on

All of that's true and valid, but it isn't the whole story here. What irks me is the author made it clear throughout the story that Lemon is this drop-dead gorgeous model-looking chick, and Kogahara isn't. She's just regular girl pretty. It isn't just their self-image (although that plays a role as Kogahara seems the shy, insecure type), other characters have commented on this too. But then she draws them essentially the same way. I get there's limits to what manga as a medium can convey, but she could have done better with this. Because as it is, it feels like that thing Hollywood does where they hire a hot chick to play an ugly character, and just have everyone pretend she isn't beautiful.

Honestly, I can’t think of any main characters that come off as “plain.”
