Remember he was a legit lolicon due to the trauma his bitch mother inflicted on him, he couldn't be around any female in the adult range without starting to have panic attacks. The current Emperor's mother was only 10 years old when the former Emperor knocked her up, then when she got older and he started avoiding her she trapped him and raped him as payback.

.....wait, what ~!?

Not exactly a strict surveillance on her. But it's not like she's likely to escape.

Are those lantern plants those with small fruits inside them?

He's talking about medical alcohol, right?

And ded.
Chinese Lantern plants are a part of the physalis family, so you probably are thinking the right thing. They have berries hidden inside paper-like husks. However, you may be familiar with a different member of the genus, like Cape Gooseberry or Tomatillo.

Some of them have psychoactive components, while others are completely safe and edible. Chinese lantern is poisonous before it ripens, which is possibly why it piques Mao2's interest, although if it is 'withered', it is ripening and turning edible.

"Withered" means dried out or shriveled. A lot of fruits stop ripening when you pick them. Are you sure it is ripening and not preserved with the toxins?

It depends upon what the author meant by 'withered'. With Physalis fruits, the outer hull withers once the fruit is ripe, becoming a husk. If you've ever seen a tomatillo with its husk on, you know an example of this. Chinese lantern plants have very pretty orange hulls around the fruit, that look like literal Chinese paper lanterns, that go very papery and dry when they wither into husks as the little fruit inside becomes edible.

Not as much traumatized but thinking of a future that would never be, one where she was picked by the former Emperor and possibly became a consort or Empress instead of growing old and alone, trapped in the Inner Palace forever.

Thank you so much for the translation.
This mystery is so compelling. I can't wait to see what's next!
