People have become so warped and astroturfed, that they can't even conceptualize admiration to a mentor. Male relationships in general have been bastardized into sexual or paraphilic. There's no place for camaraderie, fraternal love, mentorship, competition, rivalry. In today's society, the only reason for two males to interact has to be explicitly to engage in homosexuality. It's not an accident. Introspect, and ask yourself why the relationship with a mentor feels so alien and out-of-place to you. Were you fatherless? Did you grow up on a slow-drip of Hollywood and common core education? Have you obsessively avoided reading any of the classics? Did you develop your moral framework via twitter and tumblr? This is a lovely little story. My only criticism is I'd prefer less of a "Gay for Sensei" vibe.

Virtually all literature until post-modernism has been about the hero's journey, which has always included a mentor. Chiron mentored Heracles, Achilles, Aristaeus, Actaeon, Asclepius, Jason, and Medus, among others. Why do you think mentors were such an important concept, that they were included in virtually all pieces of literature until the late 20th century?
