They didn't intend to do it. The destruction of the settlement was an accident caused by their ignorance; neither of them were aware that the scent of burning flesh would attract an endman horde.

I suppose if you think of it like a Roguelite which it basically is, just because you can die and restart doesn't mean you want die or go all the way back. Granted MC also burned to death right after and then stopped caring about dying but before then he was still quite soft inside.

If anyone is playing The Hundred Line right now there's a similar situation where the characters could kill themselves to revive and heal their injuries but dying is traumatizing.
