The point is to develop her character so she can join the party. This entire chapter was her mentally finding her reason to exist and contrast the villager's previous selfishness eating from Irumyui to their selflessness feeding her this chapter.

The villagers have literally never interacted with Faputa before, only looking from a distance as a psuedo-god figure. To them she is the final child and "embodiment of value" (value being the entire theme of this arc be is monetary or peraonal or existential) and they're compelled to feed themselves to her to keep her alive.

Faputa having the memories of Belaf now lets her contrast this moment with everything they did to her mother and realize it wasn't necessarily selfishness that drove them to eat, but deaperation.

Long story short, you can dislike this arc for its content and characters but the themes here are solid. And I'd expect every layer to have longer arcs like this since apparently every layer until Nanachi was rushed as the series was at risk of being axed until then.

We got hints of the past of the Abyss this arc, fleshed out Reg's story, expanded upon the Birthday Curse and in conjuction the Abyss itself.

We've learned what exactly Reg is with Gaburune being introduced and we had some character growth for Riko and Nanachi as Riko helped during the hint and Nanachi overcame Mitty again in a more satisfying and less rushed manner.

This arc may be dragging a bit and I'd rate it lower than Layer 5, but it's far from pointless. It's much better than the Ozen Arc and is certainly more than just Guro. It's likely setting up for a new party member that can further explain Reg's past now that she has an existentialist mindset and wants to live for more than just revenge.

Nah, you're not alone

Some people just seem to genuinely think letting Faputa die and having all the build up fizzle out while the party walks away would have been a better ending... somehow

Guess that's why they're not writers

I liked the arc, its not bad, its just drastically different than the diving arc or the idofront arc, and its basically as long as those two combined, plus the slow release rate. I'll admit I liked this arc more before i caught up, just because it was easier to binge and then think about. this build up would have felt better if it didnt take so long to progress.

If Faputa joins the party, we might get more info on reg, which would be cool. The anime has already had way more hints at reg and liza, but faputa hasnt mentioned her, so where did she go, and when did she meet reg? and he was already reg by the time faputa met him.

@boondogglest Pretty much, yeah. In Wazukyan's and co defense though, they were a bunch of crazy outcasts trying to find a rumored "promised neverland" so they could live and feel they were part of something. And when shit got REALLY extreme, they had no choice but to make do with what little insane shit they had laying around (Iryuumiu showing them they can be transformed and reborn into Narehate, her creating the village in a hostile af place, effectively making it a haven of sorts).

I guess If they weren't already trying to settle down, they could have continued to try and explore and realize the full potential of having Narehate bodies. But like I said at the beggining the freak village was kind of the end goal all along.

And now Faputa develops so she can join the party. I hope If she does she doesn't end up being a one note character or they put her in the back because the author doesn't know what to do with her other than fanservice.

Ideally she could learn to be a princess and rule over her narehate citizens, but then again they were so insane they wanted to eat her on spot. So... yeah idk leaving sounds about right.

I'm fine with author taking his time to develop fantasy society full of weird creatures, plot twists and new lore. But waiting a few months for the chapter that's like 95% meaningless loli gore porn and 5% weak ass "follow your dreams" statement? I'd pass.
