Japanese defendants also have no right to have a lawyer present when they're questioned by the police. The fact that fewer cases are prosecuted is not evidence that the system actually works. It shows that by the time a case goes to trial the state has already decided the defendant is guilty, making the trial a formality, and the fact that the state sometimes decides that the accused is not guilty doesn't change that.
