Major site update: Group blocking, more external links and upcoming infrastructure upgrades

Hurrdurr give me your money to maintain mangadex and provide a site update that barely matter once every six months.

Do you donate to site? I doubt it. They provide us with a free service and ask for donations every now and again and even then it's not like their shoving
it down our throats. The only sign i've seen asking for donations in the entire site is a small message at the top right of the homepage that's it.

@hecatia Just because you want a specific feature doesn't mean it's what we need to work on at the moment. All of the current dev work is going towards preparing the site for major future updates, which means rehauling all of the code using frameworks instead of spaghetti. You're absolutely free to go use the other aggregate sites who don't have the feature you're asking for and will NEVER get an update because they're ran by people who's only interest is maximizing ad profits

MangaDex is a hobby to all of its staff members. No one's getting paid, no one has a responsibility to update the site, no one has any obligation to do anything. We paid for the first four months of MangaDex ourselves and we only began to take donations because the site was slowing down from the ridiculous traffic and people wanted the site to succeed. We have no interest in making any amount of money off the site, our users, or from scanlation groups. Otherwise we would've gladly accepted any of the 50k monthly ad deals being sent to us in emails, which would easily cover our $1k per month server costs

or hell, just use advanced search and limit it to original language: japanese if you really just wanna see only japanese stuff. It's not like it's impossible to find the specific content you want right now

I couldn't give a fuck less about sniping. I do give a fuck about trolling, and sniping just happens to be the method that guy is trolling with.

Nobody wastes effort memorising chapter numbers just in case it jumps, barely any remember group names. It's the trolling the follows list which is the problem, not some uncontrollable urge to read chapters.

How many times do I have to say he got commentbanned twice for bragging about his trolling ?

All my arguments so far were on the basis of trolling rather than sniping.

Whatever. we got the feature and I don't feel like talking to the same people that'd probably love their inbox spammed with notifications about free 1cent steam trading cards.

Blocking a group doesn't block releases that are a combination of them and another group (for example, I blocked SSSSS, but chapter 107 of Mairimashita! Iruma-kun was still visible because it was a joint release). Can we make it so that it blocks those too?

You will have to block both groups. However, if staff rules that a group is making up joints to get around the group block, corrective action will be taken.

@Sqiurmo I second this, I blocked sssss, I don't mind if I see a joint release like this on the chapter list just on the off chance that it is caught up, but I honestly don't want this in my follow list because there are very few reasons I would block a group, and this continued random chapter posting...

lol, I went to refresh the page and its gone... either your fast or they pulled the /a/ joint translation.

in regard to this, and im sure only a handful of groups are only going to get blocked by me so this may never be an issue, should there be a quick way to turn the filter on and off? its not pressing, but I could see when a manga catches up a group may go around the chapter already released if they are good enough.

Even if there aren't any visible site updates, it's not like we're doing nothing. In fact, a lot of work has been done behind the scenes to make sure that the site can still run smoothly despite the +40% traffic we have been getting in the past 4 months.

@Holo What can be done to ensure that the obvious "troll" groups (such as one that has been mentioned already in this conversation) don't just go and create a chain of groups to get around a ban so that they can continue to mess with people? I know we can simply block over and over, but admittedly, there comes a time when that seems to be a pointless gesture when that is all they have to do to get around it.

Hmmm, I never had the desire to block any scanlation groups; I'm grateful for every update I can get since translating, cleaning, redrawing & typesetting can take a lot of time depending on the manga series ._. I do block certain genres though since I'm not into them cough X'DDD

Btw, Manga Plus is a legal site where you can read mangas for free. I don't really see the problem of getting re-directed to their site... to maybe read Spy x Family

I thought this feature was going to cause problems and friction. But, After SSSS showed there colors. No problem for me any more and gliding along.
