So they basically just threw away all that research away, all those lives that were lost, because of muh MORALS. I guess that's what a world without science would be like.

Or they could just entrusted the documents to the authority, and it will be stolen and used again by someone evil. Yeah, burning them sounds better

I understand why the destroyed the research, but losing so much knowledge, especially paid for in blood, just hurts to see go up in flames.

It was the lack of morals that lead to those lives being lost. Upholding morals requires conviction. You can't conveniently discard your convictions when it's inconvenient. Science (or in this case Magical Research) is also a discipline based on a moral and ethical code. The Magic Association defined the Taboo on Necromancy based on that code.

Just saying but if we had done such IRL we would not have such a developed health capacity, we would not have any data on chemicals that are bad to the human body and a lot of other areas would be undeveloped because of it.

What they did by burning the research here was very stupid.

WHO? The next harem memeber, duh!

whether it was good to burn it or not, we'll never know since we don't even see what was in those docs.
Maybe how to entrap lost souls/recently killed, torment the dead as interrogation or torture, mass sacrifice or just plain raising skilled undead army?
If it was for those purposes its better to burn it.

To use the research would be to implicitly condone the actions that it was born out of. Necromancy is probably taboo because it always ends up wasting the lives of innocent people for research and fodder. If you get accustomed to allowing such things, you bring closer into existence a world in which people's lives are disposable precursors for undead workers/soldiers. It was the right thing to destroy it.

If we take what you said in face value then the whole world is condoning illegal medical pratices and human experimentation. In extreme the whole world is condoning what the Nazi did, yes Godwin's Law and all but this time it is relevant for the conversation, as most medicine is based on research made by the Nazi in WWII and all data we have on the effects of biological weapoms on the human body, like tear gas for example, is also the result of the research conducted by the Nazi.

Destroying knowledge is NEVER the correct choice, EVER. All it does is create the need to repeat the experiments that were conducted before when someone desires to learn about it again, it will happen and more people will die than needed because of it.

Also undead workers would be an advancement not a detriment... just use already dead people for it instead of killing living ones.

Have no idea where that came from but I agree, it would be too much work and i don't want that for me.

what are they having some 13 year olds moral dilemma for? she was a bit of a tragic person, but ultimately 100% in the wrong and evil trampling over the lives of others. they're acting like she was just doing taboo research and that was the only problem, she was a literal murderer

Agreed. This actually made me angry despite not being real.

Destroying knowledge - no matter how it was obtained - is never correct nor justified. Empty symbolism never accomplished anything. Destroying it didn't undo anything that was done either. It was simply knowledge, wasted. Burning books/scrolls/etc are the acts of a zealot who has renounced the use of reason, logic, and rationality.

If I spoke Japanese, I'd send an angry message to the foolish mangaka who decided to depict this as "the right thing to do." I hope they got many angry messages from those that do.

@wakanana
You're exactly the sort of fool who promotes burning books. Actually you directly are - only scrolls in this case. I'm glad YOU will never be in a position of power, but that doesn't mean you won't be in a position to actively harm society while promoting your meaningless symbolism over things with practical/real world value.
To use the research would be to implicitly condone the actions that it was born out of.
Such as that load of total nonsense. Knowledge is not inherently good nor evil. How you choose to use it is.

People like you - when they do get in positions of power - do foolish things like this - https://www.nationalgeographic.com/news/2016/04/160430-kenya-record-breaking-ivory-burn/
Kenya Sets Ablaze 105 Tons of Ivory
The record-setting burn is meant to send a message to the world that ivory has no value and that its trade should be banned
...
“There’s a passing of judgment from some that we’re doing the wrong thing, because Kenya is a poor country, and we could use the $150 million-odd dollars that they claim the ivory is worth to develop our nation,” President Kenyatta said. “But I would rather wait for the judgment of future generations, who I am sure will appreciate the decision we have taken today.”

This art is among the things they burned.

All to "send a message" which is pointless. Besides depriving themselves of that money (which could do very real good), they'll just have raised the market value of the other ivory. Hence they will have made poaching more profitable and attractive. They didn't bring those elephants/rhinos back to life, and their action didn't save any elephants/rhinos going forward. Supposing they where serious, dumping it on the market could have been better in order to crash the price of those poached goods. Use the proceeds to hire more people who catch poachers, etc. Nah lets destroy shit and feel self-righteous without any practical benefit!!

People who talk about "sending a message", "implicitly condoning", etc are idiots. These are the people who should be kept far away from making important decisions.

believing the ends justify the means leads to bad outcomes.
I would like to point out the means already happened and there is no undoing what has been done. You look for the best thing going forward. Making the best of bad things that have already happened. That doesn't mean you encourage future bad things. You should punish those who do such things to the fullest ability as a deterrent. But there is no possible scenario where needlessly/wastefully destroying resources and/or knowledge leads to a brighter future. None.

In fact, if you could prevent suffering with resources but instead choose to destroy them (because of how they came about etc), one could argue you are partially to blame for that suffering going forward because of your choice.
