A surprisingly good read even if you know all the cliches in the adventure party genre. Likeable protagonists, interesting characters, strong comedic scenes, expressive art, solid writing.
I'm largely disinterested in male-lead adventuring manga like these as I often find them repetitive, shallow or too bogged down and distracted by being horny that there's little to no substance I can sink my teeth into. Which is a shame, because I enjoy fantasy stories.
This manga, as of its current release, is showing a lot of promise. Will is your typical stoic, analytical male fantasy-adventure protagonist, but instead of his personality ending there or being simple audience surrogate you get the feeling that there's something more below the surface. I really like that a lot of the interpersonal comedy comes from him being very bluntly literal, but passionate about his goals. Gives me the feeling of a character who truly, genuinely means well and is excited for the path the story is sure to take him on. He even shows his potential for character growth early on as he makes a mistake and realizes he has a lot to learn from his newfound friends on how to be an adventurer. It was a small moment, but one that I think sets up his character well.
And all of the female characters have, so far, been pretty darn great! Because Will is more withdrawn emotionally, it gives the members of his party a chance to shine. They all have distinct personality types that build off one another. I think my favorite is Mii. Her design is cute and she can act a little childish around the others in her group, but it's made apparent almost immediately that she's an extremely skilled thief. I can't wait to learn more about each of them as the story progresses.
Also if you're like me and get frustrated with harems, good news! There's none of that here. Absolutely no shade to anyone who enjoys harems (I mean just look at my icon), but unless a harem is executed in a very particular way they tend to make me rapidly burn out on a series from the whole "will they wont they" stuff. I don't think this series would work as well as it does currently if it started as a harem.
Overall, this manga is still early on but it shows a lot of promise in my eyes. I think it would benefit from slightly longer story lines, as I feel the villain + reveal in the latest few chapters was a bit rushed and took away some of the potential emotional impact. There's definitely some hint towards a larger conflict
between Will and his dad,
but we'll see how it all pans out.
Overall, a solid fantasy adventure story so far! Would recommend.
I love the fact that Will is in a party of women who not only just want to be his friend, but actively want to see him hook up with other people they come across. It’s like they’re all his sisters and they want him to end up with a nice girl. It’s one of the things that sets this manga apart from others.
Why is there always a char that refers to themself in 3rd person, what so hard to just say "hi,my name is blablabla" instead of "blablablas name is blablabla" it just makes the char seem stupid....otherwise its a preety good manga so far would recomend
This is such a precious thing haha, have a few different genre but it stays light hearted. And it's so nice to see the character interact between each other.
What is it with ln/wn having absurdly long titles. I guess it's an attempt to stand out from a sea of other novels by putting the entire premise in the title?
@assman162 Did you read chapter #15 yet? They're not going against just a random orc mobs, but ALSO an orc emperor and a number of his nobz! They also apprehended a corrupt noble and killed a wicked witch. I've already got some ideas for D&D and other RPGs from this.
