Ngl, when I first saw this chapter, I expected comments to be a lot angrier over Kimura refusing Manaka's invitation. Though with her saying "it's not romantic", I have to wonder what she was aiming for.

Also, nobody commented on Ei being absolutely destroyed by that volleyball on page 20.

If you don't mind sharing, what happened in that story? I remembered reading it a bit, then wondered how the story seems to be straying from its initial premise, then kinda forgot it existed.

So The big "twist" at the end for why MC refused to acknowledge any of the 3 heroines had feelings for him is because ONCE when he was THREE/FOUR (When he was in preschool), the mains heroine's mom said ONCE "my daughter doesnt like you" out of spite because she was JEALOUS of her THREE/FOUR YEAR OLD DAUGHTER. Why was she jealous? Because the mom put her acting job before her boyfriend, who is MC's dad AND her child hood friend. The relationship fell apart because MC's dad did not appreciate always taking second place to her job. MC's dad went to remarry and start a family staring MC. FMCs mom then married and started a family with a guy WHO SHE DID NOT LOVE, because she was JEALOUS MC's dad moved on. She was trying to get back at MC's dad. She even made sure to live nearby.This did not work. But as a byproduct MC and FMC became childhood friends. So out of pure jealousy and to prevent her own daughter from having a childhood firend love story, she told a three/four year old that FMC didnt like him. This somehow mentally traumatises MC. The books did not say she was screaming/shouting, she just stated it matter of factly. FMC's mom then goes to grab milk and never come back so she can continue to pursue her acting career shortly after she somehow traumatized MC.

I'm going to go back and re-read everything, and mine for hidden clues.
But as it is, I don't have any preference about who ends up with whom. Ei is a waste of space, and I don't wish him on either girl. Also, I think he is gay. Also, up until now, there hasn't really been any emotional depth before this chapter, so be it twin-tails, or Wolverine, both are "pleasant" enough, but neither has shown a particularly deep interest in Ei, and if either or, or both now show an interest in MC, I don't have any strong opinions on any of ot as yet. It is like un until the last couple of chapters, it was a totally different story, and I don't hate it. However, even if the MC is damaged goods due to previous trauma, is that really grounds for the girls to get interested in him? Will they feel romantic, or just feel like fixing him?

If there is any justice in that story, hopefully Truck-kun isekai'd that Mom before she escalated to ever more sadistic shit. Usually hear stories like this when watching bodycam footage where a woman killed an ex.

Honestly, understand everything you're saying. Ei is kind of a nothingburger of a person outside of being best in his class in grades. Takabi has little interest in Ei outside of what she feel she owes him as a roommate, and Manaka only fawns over the cute boy that was nice to her when she was a toddler.

And yeah, really hope that Manaka doesn't pursue him with the intent to "fix him" would really ruin her character. Even her way of approaching that felt weird once she said "not in a romantic way". If anything, saying that to him just enforces his view that he's not worthy of love.

Not to get too real, but it's at least kind of realistic with the current men's mental health crisis we have nowadays, where tons of men feel disenfranchised and believe no one can or should ever love them. Hell, Googling to gather more evidence and info for my talking points, Kimura shows severe warning signs in his overwhelming disregard for his own safety (with the bridge), and noticeable lack of self worth (telling Manaka early in the story that being interested in him isn't worth it, not carving his name in the desk when they were doing it, etc.)

In the original Japanese, it wasn't an "I understand" in the sense that she understands why he didn't take her hand, but more like a "I got it." with the nuance of "Fine, if that's how it's going to be."
And the "Just as I thought, you are not going to take my hand" is also kind of like, "I knew you weren't going to take my hand."
Pretty much my guess as to what she was able to understand from this is:

• If he takes her hand and dances with her, then the missing piece inside of him isn't necesarilly from seeing himself as someone who doesn't deserve happiness or to be part of the group. It would show that he's willing to, even a little, put himself first and do the dance with Manaka, and that his issue of putting others first might not be too far gone.
• If he doesn't take her hand, then there's a much bigger issue going on as to why he will never put himself first, why he refuses to believe that Manaka could choose him (even if its not in a romantic way). And now she understands that his "kindness" to her and the others is probably a much deeper issue to a worrying degree.

I might be completely wrong here, but this is just what I got from seeing the interaction. It's honestly genuinely concerning at this point for Manaka because it's honestly scary how Kimura literally doesnt even seem to care about his own life, safety, happiness, etc in the slightest. It's as if he thinks he lives just to make sure things go well for others, and that kind of self-destructive behavior from someone you're very close to has to have come from somewhere.
Manaka's expressions, not only when she's talking to Kimura in the beginning, but after their conversation when they're sitting in the ballroom is so telling. Especially because when you look at all the expressions she's made in the series up until this point, it's a huge contrast with what she looks like in this chapter. I don't even know if there's a single word that can describe what she must be feeling based off what happened there.
