At least he modified the contract. But why these manga always have do this shit? Is this some insecure otaku shit that the girl they desire must be bound to them in some kind of "obedience" slavery bullshit act?

Is there no fantasy anymore about winning the girl's affection without this shit?

@Ninja

Imagine that the core audience of these stories have likely had no previous experience or relationships, are racked with anxiety and have self-confidence around the levels of the Mariana Trench. Enjoying the fantasy of a woman who will never hate you, never reject you and always validate your feelings (because you are incapable of doing so yourself) makes sense in that context. I'm not saying it's healthy.

"Why am I reminded of the 'nobody literally had a gun pointed at their head' defense?"

Nobody pointed a gun at her head, even if you want to say it figuratively. It was established in this story itself that the acolyte alone has the right to make decision. Being pressured in public is not grounds to call it 'being forced'. I was pressured into being my classmate's gopher in high school, I kneed her in the guts in exchange. From the start, she alone has that the power to make the decision, and I wager if she refused, the temple would've honoured her wishes. She made the choice.

"Heck did it not occur to you that if the money is hers, where was she keeping it? The MC saw her skills and clearly she did not have any kind of dimensional storage type skill."

I did wonder if she was carrying it along, but the carriage was too small to be carrying even one of those chests. As for it not being hers, have you wondered that maybe it functioned the same way as a dowry? In that the money is given at the time of the agreement (proposal) and is for the receiver's sole use at their discretion after the wedding? I know it's no longer done in Japan, but in many Asian cultures, it's an essential part of marriage. If this is the case, she'd have kept the money in the temple, so that they can reinvest the money or in a financial institution elsewhere.

Of course, I accept that I could be wrong. We do not know anything about the money or how this temple operates, except for the occasional reference about how the parents gave their whole fortunes to get her. So everything we say can only be speculation.

But one thing that I will assert is that she should give the boy back all the money if she's a decent person. She broke the sale-purchase agreement first.

@WhimsiCat maybe the novel explains it better? We just see little clips of what actually happened. I think she was just gonna do the employee contract with the young master. She only invested all in with mc.

"Truly a man of culture, who wants to enjoy life."

Yes, I am talking about his 'thought' right after rewriting the contract.

@firosahoge:
When the MC pick the strongest contract here:
https://mangadex.org/chapter/772959/10
It seems to imply she didn't want to show him that, but expected it'll be the one he picked.

Though after looking through the chapter again:
https://mangadex.org/chapter/772959/19
It seems the Acolyte get the final say in confirming the contract.

... Okay, the translation has left me confused about two things.

[ol]
[*] How does "Language Literacy" grant him the ability to "overwrite & rewrite" magical contracts so that he can change their terms as he sees fit? And more importantly, how did he even get into his head that he might be able to do that to begin with?
[*] Why did she get so upset at first regarding him unilaterally messing with the terms of the contract (from what little I could understand, it's not what he changed the terms to that's riling her up, but the fact that he changed the terms in the first place; apparently it's sort of "dangerous" to do that somehow)?

1 - I think it's one of those cheat language skills that give full mastery over any all languages he may encounter.
2 - probably because it's something no one should be able to do, yet he easily did it, like what if someone casually lifted a skyscrapper with his bare hands.

[*] So what you're saying is that the skill gave him instinctive knowledge of a secret phrase in the magical language in which the contract is written that would allow him to "edit" the contents of said contract as he sees fit.
[*] Uh, no, that's not the correct analogue. She's not saying "How did you do that?!" (method), she's saying "Why did you do that?!" (motive) with a side order of "There's a damn good reason why contracts aren't supposed to be alterable!" (issues).
[/ol]

Oh yeah, I'm also confused how he got "So you care about me that much" from what she said.

I think the author didn't consider the implications of what has just been stated, considering what Soujirou just said, he could either kill or make gods of anybody by rewriting their stats screen, quite the slip there. . .
Also being an Acolyte sounds like dedicating your life to polish your skills so somebody else gets all the benefits from it, quite irrational I'd say

@Aichan You said it yourself....she is "merchandise".

In this fantasy world, if you come across bandits that have killed a noble and are in the process of raping and killing his wife and daughters or servants, you deal with them.
Afterwards, as spoils of conquest, all that shit is yours since the one who owned it is beside the bush minus his head. Nor would you have any obligation or ability to find any heirs unless any proof of ownership papers in the loot, which the bandits probably burned immediately.

So...now you own an Acolyte. She just completely accepted her role as merchandise and gave Soujirou all her available options. Smart move seeing as how she knew nothing of those people's son, but also that Soujrou is a badass fighter who is also...ahem....considerate of his lover's pleasure, as evidenced by his unwitting public performance. She could hear Hotaru getting worked and loving it. In fact, she SHOULD know what those sounds mean because she has been trained in the art of lovemaking....which probably included women...if only it is because she was trained by them or more.
