If you can, keep us posted on this here - I would be very interested in seeing what happens when someone pushes back on one of these bad claims. (And if you end up needing financial assistance for legal representation to run this out, I would kick a few bucks into the kitty.)

Thanks, though I don't think it's too big of a problem. They just want to take down the links to MangaDex, stupid and unrelated they may be. I dislike bending over, but I'll remove them if I have to if they become too much of a headache.

As for the penalty from the DMCA, I received the email complaint from Google Search Console. The penalty is just those three pages not showing up in Google Search results. Annoying, but not a big deal.

I don't think those three pages (basically blog tag pages) will be getting tons of views so tbh, I'm not losing out on much.
It's super "fun" finding out how annoying getting hit by a DMCA though, especially if the DMCA has nothing to do with the content whatsover.

Worst-case scenario, I'll remove the links to MangaDex. 🤷‍♂️

Several users on reddit got banned permanently for linking to mangadex as well. I think it was all to licensed series that still had scanlations going.

This is what confused me the most. Those shady manhwa “scanlators” and MTL novel “translators” still show up on google. Like asura, utoon, etc. Surely removing them from search results would be very simple? If for some reason, outright takedown is impossible and DMCA requests to their websites got ignored.

Especially since supposedly the whole thing was started by kakao.

They have the entire attention of the industry on them, so I kinda doubt it. They're out for blood.

I think it was Reaper Scans, but it's hard to be certain. They were pulled down recently, and DMCAs apparently started in March or something iirc.

Not if "M" complies with the DMCA - that's one of the upsides. Everyone in the middle is indemnified if they play by the rules. This suggests to me that the publishers are making quite a bit of this up as they go along.

the titles on my reading list got gutted by the dmca takedown. there were some titles that was reading that have no official english translation. seems like they got targeted out of spite by the people behind the takedown notice. they can't exactly claim a loss of profit for a work that was never available to the English market in the first place. if they wanted to REALLY do it right, they would make the titles have a English release, THEN issue the takedown notice. instead of issuing it for those that did exist outside of their home market. if it was like that, i would certainly be more likely to buy, rather than use sites like MD.

maybe MD should transition to something like TOR or ONION, which should make it harder for 'others' to track down and send dmca notices too. There is a reason lots of super shady stuff is up on the 'dark web' - because its hard to track it back to the source. You have to have the power of the FBI, NSA and CIA just to track stuff down on the dark web.

Most likely you'll be going to get AI/MTL assisted official releases of them in a short while, at least that's my suspicion. Market will probably be flooded with a lot of the stuff that got taken down if I had to guess.

Three of the series I worked on three four years ago gut purged, but none of the ones I've been working on recently got DMCAd. Only one of them is licensed already and axed at four volumes, and the other two axed at three and four volumes. We'll see if they get an official release, but Osis finished the scanlations for one of them recently at least.The last one wasn't especially popular, and scanlations dropped fairly early, so we'll see how it goes.

My impression is that there's not a lot of fairly new series that have been DMCAd.

Yeah, some argued that they're just using bots and scrapers to DMCA everything they can. Similar to fakku and irodori that auto DMCAs any uploads of artists or magazines they have licensed on sadpanda, even though they're never going to make official releases of them. I've seen releases be removed like 10-15 minutes after uploading on sadpanda.

I still think there might be some logic in this insanity, but time will tell I guess.
