Mangadex to purge titles for legal reasons

I’ve been saying this for years now: MangaDex is trying to become the next Crunchyroll or Fakku, yet without acknowledging that it’s still a pirate site hosting illegal content. The “rules” that EtherealNeko mentioned are so broad that, if enforced strictly, about 90% of the site would have to be purged as mentioned by people here before.

For example, Sono Bisque Doll would need to be removed immediately, since it fits all of the “rules” mentioned—just like almost any slice-of-life series with ecchi elements (which is most, if not all, of them).

It’s sad to see what many of us predicted would eventually happen. By focusing on becoming a more “legit” illegal site rather than strengthening protection against DMCA takedowns, they’ve shown the direction they were heading all along.

Jumping back here because my previous post had a sentence that was poorly worded and came off as too much of a personal attack or moral grandstanding. I also didn't provide enough context on the content being removed, so that's on me.

I've been reading some of the replies, and thank you for voicing your opinions and concerns, whether in this thread or elsewhere. Users want clarification on the removals, so please find it below.

We were made aware of content that goes against our content policy, specifically clause 3.1.1 regarding underage characters in pornographic settings. The content that was removed, and some content still being reviewed, includes entries labelled Mature, with characters that are engaging in sexual intercourse and either:
  • They are clearly very young in appearance, and the content does not confirm that they are adults.
  • The content itself confirms that they are under the age of 18.
Nothing else is being examined at this time. We're currently exploring options to retain the title entry and other non-infringing metadata, but for now, we need to proceed with the removal.

Please do not patronize us. You don't care for our messages and input. The only reason you are replying to this thread is to try to maintain your existing user base as best as you can. If you genuinely cared, you would engage in an actual conversation instead of giving a meaningless platitude and then repeating 'DA RULEZ' like a robot.

Hey buddy, you're sailing the high seas. If we don't give a fuck about copyright law, then we sure as fuck don't give a fuck about your precious 'Content Policy'.

Sometimes public actions are taken due to policy changes before we've had the chance to completely communicate the changes. While this could be improved to some degree, some matters can put the site's longevity at risk, so it should be somewhat understandable that some titles disappeared before we've had the chance to work out how to word an extra rule or support channel reply. We're not intentionally trying to keep people in the dark about this.

I also believe it's pointless to debate the existance of tags, personal staff opinions, or morality of the content. We just can't have it on the site going forward, it is what it is. It'll be gradually removed as mods get notified, no one's getting retroactively mod-actioned over it, just don't add it anymore.
This is retarded. Who the fuck cares if characters are or look underage? It’s fiction. I hope this site burns down.

Fucking corpo mumbo jumbo. If you're going full corpo then be up front about it. If not, then you'd better have a good explanation for the sudden policy change or these people are gonna be pissed (they already are).

Also,
thank you for voicing your opinions and concerns
That should've been "I'm sorry I was being such an asshole. That was unnecessary of me".

Read the room and just quit being an admin dude, nobody wants you here.

Well I hope that if this site goes super duper legal or whatever noncery the site admins do and becomes some kind of "legal site" I hope all the scanlators consider the fact of just deleting everything and going to another website that appreciates manga in it's rawest form free of "taboos" or dumb appeals to authority.
Which btw if legality is an issue in a random ass country then why don't we follow sharia law it's a legal system in part of the world right?
Specially the UK which is literally becoming a caliphate unless they do something about it lmao.

Stop the misinformation. Titles being removed depict sexual activity between characters that are minors, either in appearance (handled on a case-by-case basis) or confirmed in the dialogue. It's about law and compliance with it. If you jerk it off to little kids, go and do it elsewhere; there are sites that specialise in that.
Nobody reads manga to jerk off you fucking retard. This has never been a hentai site. Some people just like spicy fiction. If it isn’t pornography then why moral police what kind of fiction people wanna access on your faggy piracy site?

As much as I disagree with EtherealNeko and this whole situation, resorting to insults and personal attacks isn't going to help anything, and will only make it easier for the mods to dismiss the legitimate issues being discussed here.
You really think they'd consider backtracking from this? it's obvious that this is happening because the staff got taken over by these kind of people so there's nothing to do about this, aside of mourning the death of MD.

Just delete this website already. What a pointless piracy site. I was right to stop scanlating years ago. The japanese cartoon community is ass, flooded with ironic moral warriors from the winnie hut jr. Thank you Covid for opening the floodgate!

The destruction of the free internet happened with 2 major steps:
1. The creation of iPhone (smartphones), which opened access to hundreds of millions of non-weirdo nerds
2. COVID, which forced even more billions non-weirdo nerds to spend their time online.

"Our" "home" is completely gone now as it's full of stupid immigrants with extreme moral panic who treat fiction like reality and corporations turning the entire place into sanitized haven for mass surveillance and money making machine.

Late Zoomers and Gen Alpha grew up with this environment, so they never knew any better, but this shit sucks as a millennials who experienced the rise and the peak of the free internet where literally everything is available to enjoy.

I think that depends entirely on how much control the original mods still have, or if the reigns are now fully in NamiComi's hands. I hope it's the former, and they will listen to reason and remember why they created this community to begin with.

And if the latter, they need to make this clear so we can all stop caring about the site entirely and migrate elsewhere instead of continuing to argue pointlessly here.

Please stop.

The content is entirely legal. There are zero children involved, this is a piracy website whose very first entry was a lolicon manga.

This has nothing to do with legality, you're a new administrator who is pro-censorship and anti-freedom of expression. The content has no reason to be removed, all you need to do is zone it properly. Please stop virtue signaling.

Titles being removed are those we have been made aware of through a legal nexus as "considered the distribution of illegal material". Moderation will not go beyond the titles mentioned; there was Papa Milk and anything adjacent, and some others still in review.

If we are notified of anything else, we will try to inform uploaders before proceeding with removals, where possible.
Again, the material is not illegal. It has been on the website longer than you've been reading manga most likely.
