It's something that happend a lots in the past IRL... People getting married, when they traveled into land they didn't know much, just because they did something they through was "normal" for the people.
This is also a plot device that has been used for hundred of year in many different kind of story.

When you're an adult the one you love IS your family... The one you love is the one you will make a new family with.
