Yeah, no. That is not enough to redeem the hero character for me. If this is Shojo/Josei genre maybe I can understand but it’s labeled as Shonen ? Either wrong tag or the author didn’t really know the audience.
He’s forced to marry another species that is responsible for the annihilation of his family. This is realistic you ape

The locking up was fine as the demon princess showed hostility towards the human princess. Decaying the flowers, at least from the human perspective, is an act of aggression because it could be interpreted as a means of attack on the princess herself. It is similar to letting off a firearm round near a world leader's family.
You've got to remember that the human princess is one of the most important people around, thus there isn't much the hero can do to smooth things over. In fact, the hero went out of his way to find a solution that would appease the nobles, reduce the perceived threat of the demon princess and be a "just" way to treat the dipolmat of a recent enemy nation.
This is the demon king's daughter though the question becomes how much or how little does he care about her. Would he be looking for just the right excuse to start the war back again. Bad move by the princess if he actually likes his daughter

All things considered I think the author wrote these characters out quite honestly for their situations— a hero that cannot immediately trust someone responsible for so much of his own suffering, the demon princess being so upper class and then unable to properly interact & address that suffering, a human princess who's while selfish & a bit immature, understands what the rules & status quo is and is able to work them to their advantage. The characters that has power do feel like they're spoiled by it, but damn does it make them unlikable lol. Especially when there's nothing lighthearted to bounce against.

I agree the story feels a tad mis-tagged as a shounen, but I don't think the Hero needs to be redeemed at all. Of course it looks bad from our perspective cause we see the real motivations of Lieselotte, but the way the Hero acts is perfectly reasonable for someone who's had all his friends killed by demons, and so is his mistrust.

The hero and king don't act like people befitting of their stations. The hero may still hate Lieselotte, but treating her less than what a demon princess, much less as his fiancee, deserve is such an asshole move. Humans are trash in this series.
Lowkey that pisses me off with series like this, I want one where the demons are the dickheads, it’s always humans being rude and never them

I.. don’t really get this one. The concept itself is interesting, but the execution isn’t really clicking with me at all.

Not realistic. She is a princess. He can’t behave this way lol. It is a political marriage so he should stfu and respect her and protect.

This is so otome coded, no wonder the uninitiated readers are a little ruffled. Lieselotte is so very much your Villainess noble girl and Schmerz is the Untrusting War Hero ML.
Give it like 10 or so chapters and you'll have him being a yearning doof.

Is this in a shounen magazine? If yes, it is a shounen manga. Simple as that.

Pro-demon, anti-human propaganda
So far, the humans have been portrayed as nothing but terrible, prejudiced, shifty characters. But what about the demons? They attacked the humans unprompted, and are also shown to be actively condescending towards humans, (example: lieselotte's maid).

Also, we're supposed to root for lieselotte? When she has never been shown to oppose the atrocities her own people commit, and instead actively supported the war by being an elite member of the army herself. Also, the peace treaty did not even come from a place of sympathy for the suffering of both humans and demons from the war, but instead her own selfish yearning for the hero.

All in all, 1/10 story for something that could have been atleast 7/10.

The princess is being depicted as a strategic schemer but she's a massive moron. The demons almost wiped them out. And now she's trying to restart the war. She's so stupid to not realize that even if her plan did work she'd only be married to the hero for at most a year before they're all wiped out by demons.
She obviously is also in love with the hero.
The love from the demon princess caused a ceasefire to a never-ending war. Love allows for seemingly illogical things to happen. The princess is probably, as a character, acting as a foil to this.
Also the major issue seems to be that the Hero (and everyone else) still believes this to be some sort of scheme even if he is warming up to the MC.
Him warming up to the MC is shown by him putting in the effort to do the ring thing to avoid restarting the war, rather than going along with the princess.
