Mimi's family details from the novel:
It's actually Mimi's grandmother who was part of the royal family, her grandmother is the current Emperor's sister. Her grandmother basically escaped the royal family to become a mercenary, which later spawns so many holo novels/movies and such about her. She's famous among noble families particularly the noble daughters wanting to emulate her. Results will vary, some will get forced back home by their families, some get captured by pirates or killed, some end up like Elma managing to successfully be mercenaries.
Mimi's father knew of the royal bloodline in him but he decided to live the commoner life with his wife and daughter. However due to a combination of bad luck and ill intent, her parents died in an assumed contrived accident. Mimi's grandmother was too far away to do anything as messages takes a long time to reach the surviving relatives. By the time Mimi's grandmother got the message of her son's and daughter-in-law's deaths, she immediately rushed back to the colony to find Mimi, but Mimi had long already left with Hiro by the time she arrived. Mimi's old home colony underwent a purge of the corrupt officials there by the time her grandmother got there, so her grandmother lacked targets for her revenge. All she could do was wait for Mimi to show up coincidentally somewhere. And the chances were considered astronomically low. Her grandmother had some information that someone had paid for Mimi situation and she was gone from the colony. It is only much, much later on that she coincidentally finds Mimi because Hiro's crew decided to revisit a previous colony because Dr. Shoko joined Hiro's harem.
Mimi previously was under the vague assumption that her grandmother was her aunt due to how young she still looks. But due to certain clues, Mimi figures her "aunt" was actually her grandmother and she was a mercenary. When Mimi comes to the capital of the Empire, by coincidence Serena sees the princess debuting to the public, since royal children stay out of the public eye until a certain age. Once Serena sees the princess, she spits out her tea and rushes to go to Hiro's ship to verify if Mimi is a royal too. They do verify that Mimi has royal blood, and verify that who her closest blood relative is the Emperor's missing sister. Mimi does not join the royal family and stays a commoner.
