I was half-expecting the sympathetic backstory, but I did not expect that turn of events at all. If he actually was a good guy this entire time, that is.

@BestBoy The problem with that line of thinking is it assumes the cats are haunting him because he killed them. Who's to say it isn't his mother's ghost doing the killing while he's just been trying to take care of cats only for them to all get brutally killed somehow? Did the flashback end the way it did on Page 7 because that cat was his first kill or did it cut away like that in order to misdirect us? Does he not learn any of his students' names because he doesn't care about his students or is he protecting them from his mother by trying to avoid forming ANY sort of interpersonal relationships? There are many, many ways this could go and all we have to go on are interpretations based on inference, nothing concrete. Remember that we don't actually know any of the rules of this universe beyond "Ignore them and they'll leave you alone".

@thewizardninja We know ghosts can't physically affect people who can't see them. We also know they ignore animals thanks to the dog running into the haunted building and not being targeted. So I think it's a stretch to think his mother's ghost is killing the cats with knives and barbed wire (we know ghosts reflect the way they died).
